I am using lapua brass with us 869 and retumbo and finding a lot of carbon on my case necks with almost every bullet I use I'm running 90 gr retumbo on Barnes 285gr getting 2848fps it is an extremely accurate load I'm ringing a 6" gong cold bore @ 700yds just seams to be very dirty advise??

If you can get the otherwise reviled US 869 to shoot, I say give a prayer of thanks, and clean your cases well before reuse.

That's what I've heard, I am however convinced its all in the rifle I had a 6.5 creedmoor that was incredibly picky on load, powder, bullet, and col. Then there's this lapua I am convinced if I could get a fork down the barrel it would shoot to 700, this rifle shoots EVERYTHING I can seem to throw at it. So far ringing the gong is easy with 300gr accubonds,250 smk, Barnes 285, hornady 285, now I've got some Lehigh 245's I am going to try just baffled by how dirty these two powders are

Retumbo is a dirty powder. If you have 4 or 5 firings on 338 LM brass it is time to anneal necks. You could be getting some leak by from that too.

That's one thing I was wondering I've got 3 shots at the most on this brass though and I'm neck sizing but your probably right on time to anneal

I believe it was 4 firings when it showed up for me. Also lost neck tension from spring back and had to drop a bushing size or two. Bought an annealer and went right back to original bushing and excessive leakage stopped.

I find H-1000 a good choice and much cleaner too.

I'm in Oklahoma and h1000 is the infamous golden unicorn with a lepricon rider...we've all heard of it but few have actually seen it lolol the only reason I have 869 is I found an 8lb jug and I can plink with it

Gotta be quick. Us hoarders will beat you to the draw.:D

Good luck
Jeff

My 6.5-284 experiences the same thing. Retumbo is crazy dirty. I was just neck sizing only but then started body sizing and neck sizing. This set my should back .002. Combined with the body size, then the neck size, and annealing every 4th reload I have the carbon around the neck only now and not down past the neck onto the shoulder. I would like to try h1000 but there is none around here either. Retumbo stays accuracte for me, even though it is dirty, for a good 150 rounds.
