The bullet in the photos below was recovered from a deer that my dad shot the day after thanksgiving. The rifle he shoots is a weatherby markV chambered in .257 WBY. He shoots hand loaded nosler coated ballistic tip 115 grain bullets. The shot was ranged at 414 yards. The bullet entered about 4in behind the shoulder and was lodged just beneath the hide on the offside shoulder. It was a quartering away shot. The bullet stayed together well but looks a little odd to me. Let me know what you think.

It may look " odd", it doesn't look "text book expansion". The important thing is it did it's job. I've recovered bullets that would make a bullet manufacturer pr department proud and same bullets at other times make you scratch your head. Have had that with different brands.

+1, especially at that range. They are sometimes reported to shed a lot more weight at higher velocity. Looks like this one opened, shed most of the weight up front, but the jacket didn't separate from the rear so it had enough mass to penetrate the whole animal.

They don't really "mushroom" they break up and peel back pretty dramatically. I've recovered many of them (back when I shot them) that had essentially turned inside out with the base becoming the leading poing and petals sheared back almost coming together behind.
They are not a bonded or cannelure type bullet so this is to be expected.
