Nephew's Transformed Rifle!

That thing looks AWESOME!

Way to go UNCLE.
My uncles who did that for me are my favorites!

Again, She's a beauty...:D

Thank you. Next week taking nephew and his rifle to Wyoming to see if we can hit a few prairie dogs, coyotes and rocks that are waaaaaaay over there!

Will blog about the trip in a new thread and will post a link to that thread here. In preparation for our Wyoming trip, the optic on nephew's rifle has been temporarily upgraded to a 6.5-20x50 Leupold MK4 scope.

Optics on this rifle have recently been upgraded to a Leupold VX3 4.5-14x14 that the Leupold Custom Shop added a TMR reticle and M1 turrets. The scope came off http://www.longrangehunting.com/forums/f53/my-280-updated-32771/

Also, this rifle shoots the Hornady Custom factory ammo with the 130grain SSTs very well, the bullet recently failed to kill a deer. This is a known flaw in tipped bullets in that they sometimes blow up on the hide of the animal and deer just gets up and walks away. Although I'd heard of this I had never actually seen it until my nephew shot a deer at 335 yards. We watched the deer hit the ground. When we went to get the deer...it was gone! it just got up and walked away.

As a result of this experience, I've been reloading 130grain Sierra Game Kings with 59grains of H4831SC which sends them at 2900+ with good ES and .5moa accuracy. This will be the new hunting load and hopefully no deer will walk away from a well placed shot.

That sucks! I had a similar situation last year wit an A-max at about 500. Watched it hit, and watched get away. No blood!!

Interesting. Although it's a fairly common experience for ballistic tip and SST bullets to fail, it's a rare occurence for an Amax to fail. Like your experience though, the SST didn't even draw blood. We searched for that deer for hours and never found a drop of blood.

I received a Remington 700 ADL .30-06 for Christmas about 4 years ago, and since then mounted a Leupold VX-I scope on it, and hunted with it for 4 years without a morally acceptable shot showing itsself. I got interested in shooting more proficiently, and tossed around the idea of buying a new stock and having it bedded for a long time. This post put me over the top, I ordered the stock and had an older gentleman (friend of my grandfather) teach me to glass bed. I used Accraglas Gel by Brownells, his glass bedding of choice.

I created this account just to thank you for posting this, and making me take the plunge! I'm more excited about shooting than ever and am going tomorrow to see how she groups for me!

I copied just a little Trebark, thanks again!

That is a good looking rifle you have there! With a new stock and glass bedding you should see some accuracy improvement. Since it seems like you're a do-it-yourselfer, do some searching on LRH and youtube on how to tune your trigger. Getting it down to ~2lbs (about as light as you can get for a factory Remington trigger) will also help your accuracy.

Glad this thread was so inspiring to you. Pretty sure my nephew will be flattered to know that his rifle has been such an inspiration. You should start your own thread about your rifle and blog about your progress. You can count on it that I will comment on it.

Thank you sir. Lowered it down when I had the stock off. I'm very impressed with how crisp it breaks. I have a few questions I would like to ask about it when I start the new post, which location would be the appropriate place to post?

Glad you have already adjusted your trigger. Many people don't think much of Remington triggers but I think that once you have them adjusted they are just fine for most applications. Of course, if you ever try a jewell trigger, you will never go back to anything else.

In terms of starting a thread of your own, post it here in the 'gun photos' section. Take a few more pics of your rifle from different angles (would be really nice if you had a 'before' picture). Then be sure to include all the particulars (make, model and any upgrades you have made). Then once you've had it out to the range, post some pics of your targets, and be sure to include details about the distance shot, accuracy achieved and the ammo you were shooting (whether factory or handloads). Then be sure to keep coming back to the thread and update it from time to time with results of any testing you've done, hunting trips its been on etc. Also, it's a great place to ask questions and get feedback about your rifle and components. You never know, your rifle could be inspiration for the next longrange hunter!

Nephew's rifle continues to transform! Not long ago I decided to radically change http://www.longrangehunting.com/forums/f53/my-280-updated-32771/ in order to reduce weight. Item number one was to remove the barrel. Since I would have an 'extra' barrel lying around, I asked my nephew if he would like to have the 280rem barrel installed on his rifle. After telling him he could shoot the Berger 168Hybrids, he said 'heck yeah!'

So we had the original 270win barrel removed and the 'new' 280Rem barrel installed. The barrel was made by Hart and is a #4 with 1:9 twist. The rifle is shooting well with the 'new' barrel. It sends the 168hybrids at ~2800fps.

Recently, nephew took his rifle out to Wyoming to help reduce the prairie dog population.

Here are a few pics of the rifle and nephew in action in Wyoming. (he sure knows how to build a shooting position!)

Trebark,

Did you buy the stock unfinished? I can't find them on the website or did you special order that?

Yes, bought it unfinished. Back when this rifle was built, Boyd's offered unfinished stocks in their regular goods for sales. Now if you want an unfinished stock you have to special order it.
