What should I do with my savage 270

My savage 110 has a 22" sporter barrel, acutrigger and a crapy stock. It does shoot Moa. I bought it cheap for a project. I want to change the barrel and stock for sure. Just don't know if I want to stay with the 270 . I like to shoot a lot when I shoot. It will be primarily used for coyote hunting and targets out to 700yards. Should I keep the barrel for now and use it up, or what can I do with the 110 long action? If I change caliber it will need to be easy on the pockets as possible.

For coyotes and some deer.....Only 1 solution I can think of...

26" 1:8 barrel chambered in 6.5 Sherman.

You already have a bunch of .270 Win brass sitting around, right? Well, lucky for you, the 6.5 Sherman forms the best out of .270 Win brass. All you have to do is get some 6.5 Sherman dies, size and load some .270 Win brass with 6.5 bullets, and shoot them in your rilfe, and out pops fully fire-formed 6.5 Sherman brass!

The dies won't be cheap...As Mr. Whidden custom builds them to order, but they are 100% top-notch from everything I've read about Whidden dies.

Rich Sherman, is a member on here. He goes by "Elkaholic", and he can give you more details.

From everything I've read about the 6.5 Sherman, it's one of the baddest 6.5's out there, but is still good on barrel life and not hard on your brass life, either.

Rich can give you more details. Do a search about it on here, and you can find more than enough to read for a day or 2. LOL

Rich can give you ballistics data if you send him a PM.

I have an older Savage 110 LA (nonaccutrigger) in. 270 Win that I had it rebarrelled to. 270 AI with Lilja 30", 1:8, 3-groove. Do a custom search on the top right corner for "My budget. 270 AI".

The .270 AI Redding dies is $120 IIRC. The advantage is you can shoot. 270 Win factory loads and develop. 270 Win hand loads to fireformto. 270 AI. With new (and upcoming) . 277 bullets from Matrix, Nosler, Berger, etc ... the. 270 is hard to beat.

For now, I have settled for 175gr Matrix VLD at 2981 FPS. In comparison, my friend is pushing the 180gr Berger VLD HSM at 2845 FPS off his 7MM Rem Mag (Weatherby Accumark).

Good luck!

I've got a 270 that I am going to make into a 243AI

Lapua brass is the main reason and the fact I already have a 6.5 rem mag. Also like Lee Collets and a regular 243 Lee Collet will work with AI

Thinking 24" #4 contour 3 groove Pac-Nor (last 3 groove Pac-Nor I got never needs cleaning and is fast)

Just another caliber to think about

That maybe more my speed. Will I have to change the bolt face also? Will you be getting a fast twist for the heavier bullets? What kind of performance are you looking for the 243 AI ? I like the 6.5 Sherman but it maybe too much gun for where I hunt might send to the next county lol.

I've been mulling over the same decision, I have a 260 and a 270 in sporter weight rifles and a heavy gun in 25-06AI. I'm trying to cut down on calibers and I also shoot a 308 win and 338-06.

In my opinion(key words) the 260 just can't compete ballistically with the 270 despite the higher bc in effective hunting ranges. Do some homework, get out your loading manuals and do some calculations. For instance in the berger manual, both shoot 140 gr vlds. The 260 has a bc of .612 and the highest "published" velocity of 2700, the 270 shoots a 140 vld with a bc of .487 at 3000, given a 2" longer barrel. The 260 drops 10.3MOA at 500, th 270 drops 8.6MOA. Even at 1000, the 270 drops 28 for the 260's 31moa. Please correct me if I'm wrong, I have nothing against the 260 and am not looking for a war. Try a barnes 110ttsx at 3400-3500 out of the 270, that's hard to beat for flat shooting, even from the magnums. There is also the nosler Accubond LR with a .600+ bc, altho it has not been proven on game. For those reasons, i'm leaning toward the 270. The 260 is far and away more popular in competition and heavy match prefit barrels are easy to find. Not everyone sells profit 270 win varmint barrels, so the cost may be more. You could look at a 6mm remington and get 243AI performance and factory dies and ammo also.

Being you have a long action, I wouldn't give up 200-300fps for a short action cartridge. You really have to rate whats most important to you: flat shooting, accuracy, barrel life, cost, etc.

Ps: I will be selling my shilen stainless select match 25-06ai with dies and brass if your interested.

No you will not have to change the bolt face

The 243AI is a "short" caliber but should not be a problem in your "long" action. I actually prefer the long actions and have rebarreled 2 rifles that were 300 win mags into 6.5 rem mags, a short action caliber. IME it allows you to seat long bullets way out there and give plenty of room for easy chambering.

Thinking about working with the 90 gr Scirrocco. Tough bonded bullet that will not explode and ruin fur or make a mess. Around 3200 to 3300 fps should be easy.

Need to investigate twists but I would think a 1 in 9 +-

Would make a nice light walking varminter with a McMillan Edge that could also down a deer when wanted
