7mm rem mag customizing/build questions

Hi guys, I'm new here, been roaming around this forum for a few years now, and decided to join the group.

I have a few questions regarding my 7mm rem mag. It's a Savage model 110, about 15 yrs. old, and I am in the process of customizing it for accuracy and long range hunting/shooting. The rifle is accurate with cold barrel shots, but tends to walk when heated up, so I decided to buy an aftermarket heavy barrel, Hogue full bed block stock, and a timney trigger.

I'm having trouble deciding which brand barrel, and whether to go with stainless or blued. I'm looking seriously at Mcgowen barrels and Rock creek. What are your opinions? Mcgowen claims to be match grade, and Rock Creek seems to be very popular. They're both around the same price, @300, which is where I'd like to stay with price.

Here's my thoughts so far, tell me what you think:
1. Vortex Viper pst 6x24x50
2. Hogue full bed block stock (versatile camo pattern)
3. Heavy 26" barrel with 1:9 twist (shooting 168 Berger vld's)
4. Timney trigger set at @ 3lbs.

Also, leaning towards no muzzle break even though this rifle kicks like a mule, hoping the Hogue stock and heavy barrel will take care of most of the recoil.

Hi Dan,

well, your grup is opening up because the barell heat (with sporter barels after 3-4 rounds the group will start opening up), or using temp sensitive powder.
Switch to Extreme hogdon powder (H1000, Retumbo, 4895, 4831) and your groups will be rugged hole.
Using 168gr is ok up to 700yrd on elk or 1100 yrd on deer,
but using the 180 VLD Berger Match will do a better job on elk, moose closed to 1k.

Get a 1-8twist barell (to be ready fr 195gr VLD from Berger) or using Matrix 190gr VLD's
26inch is to short for a LR rifle, and if you replace it go on 28-30in (min 28in) to achieve extra speed.

For muzzle brake i have on my 7RM this model on sporter barell and i swear to good is like shooting a 223 caliber. ( I can spot all my hits, and the scope stays on target all the time.)

Choose a Benchmark barell with sendero profile and the accuracy will be outstading.
I own RockCrick on my edge - only down size is ... to heavy contour

Stainless - all the way - specially if you are hunting or shooting in rain or snow (no rust)
Set your timney trigger as light you can (3lb is to heavy to achieve tight groups)

make sure you do a full bedding on the stock (even if comes with aluminum inserts)

Thanks for the response 300rum. Let's say I do go with the 1:8 twist, will it shoot the 168s if I decide not to go with the 190s or 195's? Or would that be too fast of a twist for the 168s?

Will do just fine for 168 VLD and 180 VLD.

180VLD need 1-8 twist
