Ive got an old CVA Optima Pro thats probably around ten years old and I was wondering if they make a plug for it that will shoot blackhorn powder. Its a decent shooting gun and has a good scope on it I was hoping to get it sighted in and let my dad use it but I know he wont want to deal with the cleaning and loading issues that it has with 777. I couldnt find any plug for it on CVAs site and blackhorn only lists the QR one for the new CVAs. Ive never tried the blackhorn in it since it hasnt been shot in several years but from what Ive read CVAs arent known for being able to shoot BH209 without a special plug, I guess I dont know if that includes the older models or not.

Go to the CVA website and send them an e-mail explaining your situation. I'm sure they will be helpful. Far as Blackhorn goes, you need a breech plug thats recessed. The stock breechplug (new rifles) isn't. It's for pellets.

Was at a freinds and I ran out of pre measured 209 so I shot some of his Go-Ex. Man, that stuff is dirty compared to Blackhorn. Barrel looked like a sooty lamp, breechplug was loaded...from 3 shots.

I'll stick with Blackhorn.

You can drill out the breech plug flash hole to .032" using a #67 drill bit ($1.25). This will open the flash hole up large enough to ignite BH209. Is it the best fix, well no, a proper breech plug is the best. But there are many guys drilling out their flash holes to .032" and its working well for them. I have a good friend with one of the earlier Accura's and his is drilled. He's had no problems to date.

Good answer.... I guess. I take it the breechplug is of the flat faced variety?

BH needs a recessed BP and larger flash hole to initiate a complete burn. Don't actually know how much volume you can go before you are spitting unburnt powder out the muzzle but I'll stick with 100 grains by volume. Seems to work fine.

I have a couple boxes of White Hots that I'll give to someone, I'll never use them or the flat faced BP for that matter.

My buddy shoots 110grs volume from his with complete ignition. Actually I'm quite impressed with his groups, which he isn't known for. However, his nickname is "Gut Pile", as anyplace he hunts, he leaves one. :)

You need the Western Rivers breach plug. It is designed specifically for the BH 209 powder and your gun. Call Carlos at Eds Gun Shop, he is extremely helpful and knowledgable about muzzleloaders and will get you exactly what you need. He knows all about your situation and sells these breachplugs. He sells BH209 for $29 delivered! Best price anywhere.
Here's a link with his info and some more info.

Western Powder doesnt show a plug for my gun on there website, they only show the new quick release style plug. Mine takes the old hex style that requires a wrench to remove.

I will say at 100 grains volume, I get very little smoke. I was quite taken back by the amount of smoke the Go-Ex produced. Took a minute before I could see thew target as there was no breeze at all that day (at my friend's range).

It appears that the Thor's shoot well at 100/volume as well. We shall find that out bext year. He was sold out of 300's and I didn't want 260's. I fiugured the 300's would be pretty consistent with the Barnes 290's I'm using now.

Friday after this, I'll be looking for at least an 8 point on the private, never hunted land I have access to. Gotta sprinkle some angel dust prior to, like tomorrow afternoon.

I used his sizing kit and the 500 fits well but the 501 is a tough ram down. The 500 just engraves the rifling on the skirt, that should do it.

I am a bit concerned with copper fouling but I'll cross that bridge with Sweets when it becomes an issue.

call EDS gun shop as posted above ask for the gun room and Carlos. He is very helpful. My last cva was from him.
