300 win mag vs 300 ultramag Remington SPS

I have the choice to get a replacement gun from Remington. The model will be SPS stainless 26" barrel. Would you go with a 300 win mag or a 300 ultramag? As of right now I plan on putting it in a XLR Industries chasis.

If you want to get any sort of barrel life out of your gun, go with the .300 WinMag.

If you are pounding elk or moose beyond 1,000 yards, then the .300 Ultra.

But if this is mostly a target rifle doing some hunting on the side, and you plan on shooting it a bunch, go with the .300 WinMag.

The 300 rum isn't any more overbore than the 7stw is Muddy.
I've got hundreds of runds down my 300rum lh bdl and the bore looks new and shoots as well as when I got it. The 300rum is spendier to load but you can load it down to 300win ballistics easily. You can't load up a 300win to 300rum levels. It is more of a can you take the recoil thing here but a good muzzle brake kills that problem. I like the 300win and shoot the heck out of it, but the rum is a bit better performer than the 300win.

I would get the win mag.

I wouldnt dare shoot my 300 rum if it didnt have a 5c barrel and muzzle break. Otherwise it pounds the crap out of me. Im not that tough.

I never said it wasn't comparable barrel life to the STW...I knew what I was getting into nearly 12 years ago when I got my STW...And knowing that, I don't shoot the crap out of it like I do my other calibers, like my .308 Win. I was just making sure he was aware what he would be getting into by going with the RUM.

with the 230 bergers, I'm starting to think that the 300 RUM is possibly the most versatile hard hitter out there (even more practical than the big .338's... maybe).
My brother in law uses my old one to kill a lot of stuff.

If your shooting targets a TON drop down to a .308 win. if its for hunting 300 RUM!

I definitely agree...If you're shooting alot, and insist on a .30 caliber.....Go with the .308 Win with a heavy barrel. It will last ****-near forever.

I have a 300 WinMag. Before I ported the Barrel it was a killer. now the felt recoil is like my .25-06. I really enjoy shooting it now. I know this might disagree with what the other guys are writing, but I keep it in my truck and its kind of my go-to gun when my .22LR isn't enough. seems crazy to go that big but its comfortable to shoot and its an older Winchester model 70 with a 2# trigger that has been scratched up and I am not trying to keep it nice anymore. It was my first High power as well which is why I am so comfortable with it.

Having said all that, I have laid down whitetails at 500 yards with it that have never gotten back up. as most people say, its about shot placement at extreme distances. so the 308 at 1000 yards would probably be to small for a good clean kill but I wouldn't want to get hit with one at that distance, especially in the chest! (165 grain bullet @ 2800FPS MV has 700 Ft# energy at 1000 yards). With a 300 WinMag a 200 grain bullet with a muzzle velocity of 2900fps, you still have just over 900 Ft Pounds of Energy left at 1000 yards. If you can push a 220 grain bullet 3000FPS with the RUM you will get just over 1000 Ft# of Energy @ 1000 yards. Just for reference, a 243 can easily kill a deer at 500 yards with good shot placement. 100 grain bullet with MZ of 3000FPS yields 1052 Ft# of Energy. I would say that is more than adequate power if you are good with your rifle. So if you want to kill an elk at 1000 yards (how many of those shots will you make in your life?), you would probably be better off with the RUM, but if you are going to stay within 800, the win mag would be IMHO, more than enough. Of course, like with most issues on this forum, it boils down to personal preference...

For the conservative, 300WM
For long range hunting, 300RUM

If it were my, consider a 300WSM as well.

I have WSM and RUM. I like both.

In the scenario you have described , go with the win mag. Since your putting it in the XLR chassis , and I'm assuming you'll be using the AI mags and that to me is deciding factor.
I love my ultra for long range, but my win mags get shot a lot too.

My personal taste and experience would say 300WM also due to barrel - length. 26' is fine for the winny but for the mega case of the 300RUM with it's huge amount of slowly burning powder even 28' are hardly enough. So, if someone has to carry the rig in hard terrain the 300RUM shouldn't be the choice. If it's all about hardcore LRH then the 300RUM has to be the answer. Recoil isn't any longer an issue for both of them provided that good brakes are mounted. gun)

I like the RUM or WSM. If it was me I'd go with the big 300 RUM only because I'm not a fan of belts and I'm a firm believer in bigger is better plus pushing 125 gr ballistic tips a few hundred fps shy of 4000 has had my interest for a long time
