Well, we teamed up with Jayson (Doublezranch), his son Zayne, and his father, Derald, again and went down to unit 23 in Wyoming to whack some goats. They "brought" 4 tags, Jayson and Zayne both had 2 doe tags and Derald had one, but brought the one from last year by accident. I had 2 doe tags and an any tag, and my Dad had 2 doe tags.

We drove down Thursday (10-3-13), and we ran into some snow on the way, Jayson lost a couple pounds from the bottom of his camper in-route. :D I don't know exactly what went MIA, but maybe he can explain it a bit better. LOL.

Anyway, we went to sleep to some light snow fall, and woke up to heavy snowfall... and 5" of snow . It snowed the entire day, while we huddled up in the campers, and dumped another 10".

We woke up on Saturday morning to clear skies (YAY!). We drove down to Wright, watching a couple of plots of state land. Nothing on the way down. A lot of the roads were closed, and we waited... and waited... and waited... but finally, they opened the road we needed. We took a county road to a few parcels of state land. On the first one there were a couple other hunters stalking some mule deer, and there was a decent antelope buck and a few antelope does hanging around watching. They shot and took down a nice mule deer buck and a mule deer doe, but chased the antelope away. They left the two shooters to take care of the mule deer but got in front of us and got to the next chunk of state land before us. Of course there is a herd of about 45 antelope, no shooter bucks though. They shot and missed, but the herd didn't take off to far, and we tried to put a stalk on them but they got out ahead of us and off of the state land. So we drove up to the next one and saw two bucks moving around at about 1200 yards. We put the spotting scope on them and I couldn't decide if I wanted to go after them or not. I told Jayson to take a look at him and he told me he was definitely a shooter, and was actually quite a bit bigger then I thought. That sealed the deal for me, so we went off after them. We got to within 250 yards of them but they saw the 6 of us and went over the top of the hill. We followed and saw they were with a group of does. I think there were about 10-12 of them. Jayson, Zayne, and I crawled up to the top of the hill and got set up. They were from 260-320 yards out. Jayson found one of the bucks and told me to get on him. I did and I started the countdown. 3...2...1... And the shooting gallery began... :D I shot and my buck dropped his front legs but got back up and started trotting away, I shot at him twice more but missed, he went up on his back legs and tipped over backwards. While that happened, Jayson and Zayne were shooting like crazy! Zayne and Jayson both dropped theirs, and picked another one and each dropped another. We went up to the goats after the war was over, and I was shocked when I saw my buck. Man did he have some mass and height! His cutters are about 3" above the tops of his ears! And from the side, his bases are about 2 1/2" wide! We had to drag them about 1500 yards back to the truck. Zayne was using his Mom's 270 WSM shooting the 110 TTSX, and Jayson was using his 7 rum and 150 TTSX, I was using my 284 win with the 162 Amax. Here are the pictures. Zayne is with the bigger of his 2 does.

Congratulations to all, looks like a great time was had. I sure missed not heading out for goats this year, it's just good fun hunting the buggers for some reason, maybe it's that they drag real easy compared to elk :D

Kinda interested how those 110TTSX performed out of that 270 WSM for Zayne?

Nice job Riley. And a great buck you got there. Looks like a fun day to me.

Thanks for the great story and sharing your hunt. I knew the way you were shootin that 284 in Townsend you would be whackin and stackin this year.gun)

Jeff

Holy crow that looks like November. You're killing me with these early pics....Enjoy the rest of the season and you're early season looks GREAT. Nice start of the hunting season.

Rhian, I wasn't there when they were gutting, and I forgot to look when we were skinning and boning out. IIRC MV was 3550 fps.

Jeff, Thanks, I feel extremely confident out to 800 yards with this rifle with the 162 Amax, and I really like how they are performing on game.

We are going to mount my buck, and get it scored. I think Derald wants to mount one of the does. It was by far the most fun hunting trip yet, we laughed the whole time. Oh, and I forgot, Jayson's transmission on his truck was acting funky, it wouldn't go into reverse or park, so we had to push it back to hook up his trailer. LOL

Next up is Elk in SE Wyoming, we leave Saturday morning.

I missed the Birthday change, but Happy Birthday. This year I was points only on all my apps. Next year I gotta get back in the Antelope game, too much fun to let many seasons go by. It's never snowed like that on us. Congratulations.

HaHa!! A couple of things are very true.

1. Half the underside of the camper flew off in the snow storm.

2. My shifter linkage froze up and we had no reverse or park.

3. My father who I love to death brought his 2012 goat tag instead of his
2013.

4. I really had to convince Riley to shoot that buck. Even after the 2 hour
antelope field judging video we all watched!!:D

What a great time. It was fun from begining to end. I never thought the snow would end. It was amazing. Riley made a wowza shot on that goat. When I laid down, It took me a second to spot the buck, I made sure Riley was comfortable and he could see him. Zayne had already picked out his date so it was up to me to find one as well. I let Riley count it down....then after Riley shot, I shot and then Zayne. 3 dead. Zayne and I hit a couple of stragglers on the way out and the game was over. Wind was blowing roughly 20 mph and I judged the distance at 300. It ended up being 320. When the dust settled 5 dead goats. One exceptional buck, and memories that will last a lifetime.

Next trip for Zayne and I is to Northern Minnesota for Black Bear. Leaving Friday!!

Rhian,

As you know, Zayne was shooting the 270 wsm. I did some loading for him and ended up using 67.5 grains of IMR 4350. It was pushing the 110 ttsx 3550. Once we figured the distance, (Riley was able to make Zayne a drop cart) Riley and Zayne looked at the drop chart and 6 inches high was the magic number. When Zayne pulled the trigger, I am sure he screamed "I dropped one" before the animal fell!! The bullet entered just behind the front shoulder and dropped that goat stone dead. Exit hole was about the size of a bottle cap. He hit another on on the run. He said that he waited till he saw brisket and snapped the trigger. Another dead goat. I love the bullet and powder combo. I was alittle concerned about the bullet being so light, but it flew straight and true, even in a 20 mph wind. I asked about the recoil and his reply was it was nonexsistant. Everything that bullet hit, went dead in a hurry!!

Thanks for your insight on this bullet. It was everything you said and more!!

I was the guide (well sort of) for this group of misfits. If being the only one with a gps and a map to find state land qualifies as a guide, than I was it.

That was the craziest hunting weekend ever. From not knowing whether or not we will be able to get out of the parking lot to dropping 5 goats at one time. It was fun to watch from 50 yds behind the firing line. The goats didn't know which way to run so they just stood there and hoped not to get hit. Riley dropped the front legs out from under his buck and it jumped up, went 15 yards and was coughing up blood. Then the hail of fire from Jayson and Zayne added to the list of victims. It's almost as much fun to watch everything as it is to do the shooting -- ALMOST!!.

Hey Jayson ---- say HAPPINESS.

Still laughing about that one, and I bet Riley will get a smirk on his face when he reads that. Jayson, you can explain the rest of that inside joke.

If anyone gets a chance to hunt with the Doublezranch crew, here are a few pointers:
1: Prepare to laugh your butt off for the duration of the hunt
2: Make sure you have a can of peanuts along for Jayson's dad, Derald
3: Take along a bunch of bananas for Jayson, that is his favorite fruit.

Jayson is starting a new business: Camper Repair: Duct tape, zip ties and a tin snip. That guy can fix anything. He even has a boogie board so he can slide under the camper on the snow. CLASSIC!!!!!!!!!

Thanks Jayson for making this a weekend we will never forget and all the laughs. It was a Blast and Riley has a nice Buck

Jim (The guy that buys Riley's tags):D

P.S. Jayson, please post a pic of your new stocking cap.
P.S.S. Roy in Idaho --- did I use enough returns to space the words out so you can read them? Riley said your eyes aren't that good anymore. :D

Alright....Alright....Lets get a couple of things straight here. First thing I want to tackle is Jim considering himself as a guide. Yes he did have a map, and yes he did have a GPS. However, when the guide turns on his GPS and gives it to me and says, "Do you know how to work this?" Priceless!!!

Second, the hapiness joke. When Riley was leaving my camper on Friday night, as he was leaving I looked at him and yelled RILEY, of course he turned around. I said, did you know everytime you say hapiness, you say penis? The rest of the weekend....Hapiness!!

Third, when my father takes his teeth out...of course hes speech isn't the best. Ever since I was a little boy (37 years), dad eats peanuts before he goes to bed. Soooo, when it was time to start winding down, he asked for his Penus....Holy moly that was a gut buster!!

The bananas.....well, I like bananas. There's nothing wrong with that!! :D

As far as the camper goes, thank goodness that we were at a Walmart!! They had everything I needed to get her usable!! Jim, if you need my boogie board in Wyoming, I'll send it to you!!

Thank you Jim and Riley for a weekend of laughter and fun. I mean gut wrenching laughter. You guys are the best. Can't wait for our next adventure!!

Jayson

Yeah, the guide thing was a stretch, because anyone that puts 3 guys on a herd of antelope and they end up shooting 5 would have received a big TIP for their efforts. All I received was.... here - drag this dead animal to the pickup. LOL

The laughs were TIP enough. Thanks again for a great time.

Back to WY for elk on Sat. Hopefully I can fill my cow tag and then put Riley on a Bull. If we tag out early, we will try and fill the rest of our goat tags on the way home. Maybe your dad could drive down and meet us, tell him to bring the 2013 tag this time. HAHAHAHAHA

Haha, man I wish I could have seen his face, I'm glad it worked for him!! It seems that recoil isn't much of an issue when your hitting the giggle switch on some goats gun)
