First custom rifle is here and i think its a keeper!!!!!

Been wanting to build my first custom rifle for some time and about a yr ago i decided i was going to use my first rifle for the donor action. It was a 89 model 700 LH BDL in a 270. After lots of research i ordered a #3 Rock barrel and a McM Edge stock. Finally decided after lots of deliberation on the 6.5 Sherman, thanks Rich!!! When all parts were in off she went to Jon Beanland to screw it all together. Kudos to Karl for fluting the barrel, bolt and skeletonizing the bolt handle. Jon swapped out the bold knob and did all the cerakoting. Got it back a few months ago and topped it with a Leupy 3-18x44 VX-6 w/ firedot and set in a set of 30mm lows. Weights in at 7.74lbs. Not an ultralight but light enough for an all day carry.






Got a pile of 270 brass and all the dies i needed for forming and started the fireforming and annealing process. Once done i loaded up a bunch of test rounds with the 140 Berger VLD's.


Off to the range yesterday for the first time with the rifle. Man am i stoked on how well it shoots!! Velocities were on the slow side escpecially with IMR 7828 but got lots of room to work up till i hope between 3100-3150. Had zero pressure but not suprised since my vel were low. Retumbo just didn't impress me yet but RL 25 and 7828 were golden. Gonna do alot more playing till i get the target velocity without any pressure indicators. Then i'll play with seating depth. By the looks of the initial loads i got a winner in a lightweight build.






Once agian a BIG THANKS to Rich for all his help along the way. Needless to say i now have a 7 mag and a 300 Rum now in the works.

Sorry about the first target pic. Been working on my Remington 7600 in 35 Whelen as well. Think i found a winner with the 250 gr Partition and 3031.

Nice looking rifle Roy, and some good shooting too! It will shoot better the second firing with your brass. I noticed the shoulders were quite rounded. You could up the fire form load by a couple of grains if you wanted. With that 24" barrel, you will probably top out around 3175 ish! I can push them over 3200' with my 26". You should be able to come up with a very good accuracy load over 3100'. Congrats!.......Rich
p.s. Shot some 160 Matrix the other day at 3050! That should put a smack down on some elk with a b.c. near .7..........Rich

I believe it's the '06 or .270 Win is the parent case...

It's based on the .270W but bears no resemblance after fireforming. It holds approx. 11% more powder than a 6.5-06......Rich

Dammit Rich! Now that I'm building a switchbarrel on a standard action you're making me want to build a 6.5 Sherman...Can RCBS make dies for it?

I don't want a 6.5-284 like everyone else....The 6.5 Sherman would be a fun addition to go with my .25-06 AI for whitetails.

What's your point? I can functionally use the 6.5 Sherman to it's potential...I have a 7STW and only LR animals I hunt are deer. There's really no need for a .300 RUM or a big .30 cal...

That was meant for the OP, at the end of his first post he said he has a 7mm rm and 300 rum in the works.
