Where does LR stop and Extreme LR begin? In your opinion

Just curious to get some opinions here on what you think. It is super mountainous here where I live and shots over 300 yards are hard to get. To most people here 300 yards is a long shot and 500 is just insane. I actually only have 2 spots to shoot over 400 yards here. One place to around 800 and one to 1050. But the farthest I have shot is around 800 so far. To me I call long range past 500 and extreme past about 900

So what's your opinion about categorizing distances??

Line of demarcation is precisely @ 1177 yards cause that's where my favorite super huge rock formation is across the canyon.

Good soil for POI impact spotting up to that distance.

I hike back down the hill about 10 minutes, change directions and shoot a mile.

I guess I would say for a general statement that 500 yards begins long range then at 1000 or 1200 ELR kicks in. But with todays ever growing technology and available gear, LR and ELR are moving out from where it was just a few years ago. There are several shooter shooting regularly past 2000 yards these days with amazing accuracy.

Another thing to consider when looking to set criteria for these types of shots is to consider what we are shooting.

I feel 1000 yards for my 338 is no big deal at all and almost a waste of ammo. But if I was shooting a smaller rifle like a 223 and doing reasonably well at 1000 I would say that is ELR for a 223. The guys on here shooting 22's at 500, well I am fine calling that a ERL task.

+1

cant really say it any better.

Shooting conditions make a dramatic difference as well. I have had the opportunity to take a shot at trophy animals at 600 yards that I passed on because I was not confident in shooting in the conditions at that time (wind speed and several directional changes over the distance from me to the target)

Other times, as mentioned, 1000 yards is almost boring to hit 1/2 moa sized targets at so it all comes down to knowing your conditions or not as to what is long range shooting and what is extreme range shooting.

In ideal conditions, again, I feel its pretty much anything over 1000 yards.

I think like others have mentioned it depends on the cartridge your shooting. I can tell you with my 338 Edge AI at 1100-1200 yards cold bore shots on an MOA size target become much more difficult wind reading wise and my cold bore hit confidence is dramatically droped compared to 1000 and below, even in good conditions (0-5mph).
