Hi All,
I want to buy myself a new rifle in the near future and what i'm thinking is a Remington 700 VTR in the .308 win, on this I would mount a leupold mark 4 6.5-20x50. The main use of this rifle would be to wild Shoot pigs on my cattle station in North Queensland, Australia. But I would also like to be able to do a bit of long distance target shooting with this setup. I would like to know what you guys think of this weapon and if you could recommend me some cheap but good ammo it would be great!
Cheers, Zade.gun)

Can you please specify on hunting distance, and target distance... The .308 is not a caliber I would shoot hogs at further than about 350-500 yards. Deer, 750 yards, and targets 1K.

It's a great caliber used inside its intended ranges, but when you get to pushing the edges of its ranges it fades quickly.

.308 Win is my favorite caliber to shoot at the range. Cheap, accurate, and can have fun all day long and your shoulder won't hurt the next day. Plus, it's an easy caliber to load for, it's not really finicky. Also, components are everywhere, so you can easily find reloading stuff for it.

That being said....I would look into something other than a VTR...

I would look into the Rem 700 SPS Varmint .308 (26" barrel), 700 Varmint SF .308 (26" SF barrel), or the 700 XCR Long Range .308 (26" barrel).

My pick of the 3, would be the R700 Varmint SF .308 and put a B&C Medalist tactical stock on it for about $250, and you'd have a real slick shooter. And still come out about $350 cheaper than the XCR Long Range.

Thank you for your information, I'm sure I'll find it helpful.
The distance that I'll be most likely be hunting at is anywhere between 75-400m for a challenge. The target shooting could be at anywhere between +500m.
Prior to posting this thread I was looking at the rifle you recommended but the longer barrel was a major turn-off. A lot of the hunting I do is on foot, from inside a car or off a motorbike. Hence I want something that I can pull out in a hurry and shoot freehand. Also I was wondering what you thought of the scope and any suggestions for ammunition?
Thanks

Check out the R700 SPS Tactical .308. It comes factory with a 20" bull barrel. I think it might be right up your alley.

It looks like a very nice rifle and what do you think of my scope choice? And also, what is it exactly that you don't particularly like about the VTR?

I don't really care for the weird triangle barrel or the muzzle brake, as a .308 doesn't need one. It's just unnecessary.

They're good scopes, I'm just not a Leupy fan. The Mk4's are nice, just not my top choice. If I had enough money to drop on a Leupold MK4, I'd just spend a little more and get a Nightforce 5.5-22x50 MOAR.

Just my personal preference. There's nothing wrong with either scope choice you make.

Also, look into the EGW HD 0 MOA rail, and TPS TSR aluminum low-height rings.
