I need to get a new stock for my 06. The one that is currently on it is the high gloss standard stock. I found a dark walnut on ebay for $170. It is the stock with the thumbhole. Is this a good idea? What do you all use for stocks on your hunting rifles?

Nice stock. It'll be accurate if you bed the lug and action, and float the barrel. And by the time you do all that, you will be in it for about the same amount of money as the others.
However, it will never be as accurate as a stock with a full alunimum bedding block for long range.
Just keep that in mind, no matter which way you choose.
Personally, I'd save up some more and get the B&C Medalist.

I believe that those are very high quality stocks. However, I figure that the thumb hole/pistol grips would be easier to shoot?
On the ebay stock, are those things that I would HAVE to do to the stock to be able to mount the action and barrel? I am not worried about doing competitions to shoot great groups at 1000 yards. What I am worried about is being able to shoot a vital area on deer/big game at the very longest, 500 yards. I might target shoot past that range, but probably not much.

You don't have to do that to get the stock mounted, it will just help with accuracy. However, one thing I just noticed is that the stock you are looking at on ebay is for a short action, which will not work with a 30-06. You would need a long action stock.

COhunter is right...You don't HAVE to do them for the barreled action to fit. But honestly, I would say it's almost necessary for the rifle to SHOOT properly and attain consistancy in grouping and accuracy to bed the action & lug, and free-float the barrel. At the very minimum float the barrel. I do that with every gun I own.
Are you wanting a cheap stock to put on a gun to sell it? Or are you planning on keeping it for a long time.
Also, be aware that wood stocks are ALOT more sensative to moisture, water, and temperature swings than synthetic stocks, and WILL affect accuracy. Just an FYI.
So if you are planning on hunting in snow, moist environments, or extreme hot or cold conditions, or the rifle is going to be bumped around...I'd go with a synthetic stock with a full aluminum bed block.
I see. The whole reason for getting a new stock is to have a recoil pad and the high gloss is too shiny and might spook off game. Could you point me in the right direction of a good synthetic stock that is within reasonable price range? I do not really know much about this, obviously.

What price range are you looking for? The stocks listed earlier are the best bang for the buck. However, you could also just install a recoil pad on your current stock and paint it if you want to go the cheapest route and accomplish your goals. Just a thought...

No, simply because you do not have the bedding block. If your original stock is wood, it also can have the temperature sensitivity that Mud spoke of earlier.

Cause $238 for a B&C Medalist is a steal...What you get are features of $700 stocks in an inexpensive package.
Most quality stocks will run you in the $300-1000 range. So for $238, you're paying for a high-performance stock for the price of a factory flimsy cheap plastic junk stock.
And to answer your other question, NO, the factory injection-molded plastic junk stocks are not going to be anything buy a nuissance...You would be better off with a wood stock than a factory plastic $100 synthetic stock.
The only good thing a factory plactic remington stock is good for, is a spare boat paddle...Or if you need a new stock to sell your rifle and don't want to spend alot.
Some Remingtons come with B&C Medalist stocks or H.S. Precision high-end stocks already on them. I own a few... But for the most part 75% of the synthetic stocked Remingtons come with a 100% plastic, hollow, piece of junk for a stock.
