I have a 338 Lapua built on Montana 1999 action. My guestion is I note that there is long leade or throat and if you want to set the bullet closer to the lands you cannot do to maganzine length, I looked at other actions and I find the same problem. I assume the reason is safety.

It is probably a SAMMI chamber and it is for safety when shooting factory loads that tend to be hot.

A reloader can seat the bullets longer working up to max but they have to be single loaded.

With good loading and minimum sizing free bore is not a problem for accuracy.

But you can...with a competent machine shop and/or gunsmith for about a hundred bucks, machine the magazine to take a longer COAL. You won't get it to the maximum length (to the lads) but you gain quite a bit of length and you won't have to single feed.
