Scope ring dilemma

I just got my new Vortex Viper PST 6x24x50 scope today and now I need rings and bases. I have a Winchester Model 70 long action that I am putting the scope on and it looks like I am going to be limited on my choices of bases. I want to get a 1 piece rail and am looking at the EGW bases. I was set on getting Burris Zee rings to go with it but noticed that they are for a Weaver rail and the base is a Picatinny type. This makes me nervous on my scope possibly moving because of the differences between the two. Is anyone running a combination like this? I was trying to get away from having to lap the rings but if I go with a different brand what is recommended?

Thanks for the help

Thomas

Burris makes zee rings in multiple configurations. Unless u get the signature rings u are still lapping. My advice is vortex rings. The set I just put on look and work great and for the money you save u can afford to do the whole lapping thing.

I have a Burris Zee rings (if you get the one with inserts, no lapping is required) and EGW picatinny rail on my .270 AI.

... and a Burris tactical on picatinny on my wife's AR

No problem whatsoever thus far.

Checkout the link below, esp the last paragraph.

Picatinny Rails, Weaver Rails, What

Good luck and happy safe shooting/hunting.

Good link. I have not had a problem using good Weaver rings in a Picatinny rail. I do it often. I always slide the ring to the front of the recoil slot before tightening the cross bolt. That removes slack. Burris Zee rings are well made, fully machined steel rings. The screws seem to be good quality as well.

I recommend bedding the base. If you don't you could end up with stress in the base, causing the rail to be slightly bent or twisted. In that case, lapping the rings is a good idea.

Its quite evident you didnt do your research and COMPARE the 2....Weaver VS Picatinny. Picatinny is just a much closer tolerance machined part ( basically) than the Weaver is.

Lapping of scope rings IS NOT a "requirement".

Well in my RESEARCH it says that the picatinny grooves are .206" wide and the weaver grooves are .180" wide. So if I use the weaver rings on a picatinny base it will have some extra slop in the groov, which makes it possible that under repeated or heavy recoil that the rings could shift on the base.

And yes I was referring to the Burris Signature rings with the inserts in them.

The difference between picatinny and weaver is only the size of the recoil lug. You can put weaver rings on a picatinny rail but not picatinny rings on a weaver rail.

The true dimensions for either ARE NOT "exact"..meaning they are toleranced. The vast majority of times any ring fitting one will fit the other BUT thats not a "gimme"...because they do have tolerances.
