I going to be reloading for long range paper and just for fun to shoot groups. But I like to eat hogs and whitetail. Every center fire rifle I own has either put meat on the table or is capable of it. I don't really want to work up a load for paper and one for hunting and haft to worry about rezeroing. Calibers in question will be from 243 to 300wm. Bulets something along lines of bergers which brings questions up of will the target bullets in there line take game. And hornady match and AMax line. Just looking to keep things as simple as possible.

I know of about 300 different whitetails, hogs and elk that my family has killed in the last 4 yrs that would say unfortunatly yes.

If you shoot Berger VLD bullets, their target models should have an identical POI as their VLD Hunting bullets. I know mine do @ 100 yards.

Hope this helps. They're the only brand I know that has both target and hunting models of the same exact bullet. Difference being the target models have a thicker jacket because shooting paper and steel you won't be needing any of the expansion properties.

Non of the animal I have ever shot with either one could tell me the difference between the target and hunting version.:D

So all bergers kill got it. But what about the hornady bullets tho? And even in a 243? When it comes to a 7rm or a 300wm anything is effective. Does this hold true to even the smaller calibers?

Leave game with small caliber....I'd go with hunting bullets for maximum energy and expansion.

For example, when I hunt whitetails, I use Nosler 110 Accubonds and Berger 115 VLD Hunting bullets.

+1. I have found this to be the case with my 6.5x284. The Berger 140 Hunting VLD's work well on deer from 50-1000 yards and as accurate as any target bullet I have used.

buddy who used to do crop damage shooting with us swore by his 7mag and 160 grain match bullets.

The Berger's work even in the smaller calibers like 243.This is my daughters doe from last year shot at 244yrds,,,243 1-8 twist Berger 105 vld.Not a long shot but not in your lap either.DRT!!! I was smiling bigger than her! :)

Ive killed a dozen deer with my Hornady 6.5 Grendel 123 gr Amax and ive also killed a nice 8 pt with my .308 Federal 168 gr Gold Medal Matchking.
Now in all truthfulness my go to deer bullet for my .308 is Hornady 150 gr Superformance but both the Amax and the Matchking did the job.

I've shot several deer with my old custom Rem Model 7 .308 shooting Hornady TAP (red box LE ammo) 168 HPBT tactical ammo, and it knocked them on their ***.

Hornady makes superior bullets in my opinion. Dont get me wrong ive killed deer with Corelokts , Fusion, Weatherby and many others but Hornady is the best Factory made ammo in my opinion.

Honestly, the best luck I've had is with Hornady and Federal Premium factory ammo.

IMO, the most accurate factory loaded ammo is going to be the Nosler Custom ammo. But the Hornady and Fed Premium is right up there with it.

The Hornady red box TAP is LE ammo for LE Dept snipers & sharp-shooters, and is made to expand nicely, so I figured I'd give it a shot on whitetails, and it worked out great! I wish I still had my old Mod 7 custom, but it was swiped by a thief back in '08...It has been replaced with my 700 5R .308 Win, and even though it's not QUITE as accurate as the old custom 7 (1-hole rifle), it's not far off, with some small tweaking. The old 7 was a true 1K rifle. It had an M24 barrel, cut down to 20", on it. I miss that gun. Hopefully the cops or somebody will find it one day and I can get it back.
