My Friend and I went to the range. We tested his Rem SPS Tec 308 20" bbl 1:12 twist rifle. it has a new vortex Viper pst 6-24-50mm (mil)

He reloaded two different bullets, the Berger 155 VLD Hunting, (.439 bc?) and the 155.5 Berger Target VLD with a .483 BC. all groups today was 100 yards.

the Hunting VLD's with less BC shoot well. 3 shot groupings of 0.75 inch, 0.65 inch, .375 inch and 0.195 inch besting my best group of today with my 204 of 0.210 inch.

He is using 45.5 of Varget on both bullets, yet the 155.5 Berger Target bullets group like 2.5 inches at best.

I know his throat on the 308 is so long that he can not get the 155's to touch the rifling with the bullet barley in the mouth of the case.
Not sure why the higher BC Bergers shots like crap and the other one does not.

could it be the higher bc bullet being longer does not have enough spin on them leaving at 2650 fps (chonoed). or is a jump to the lands/rifling too much for the high bc VLD?

I feel bad as I talked him into buying these bullets for his new 308. He wants to be able to shoot to 1000 yards. and with his short barrel, I told him this will be pushing it, and 2650-2700 fps and a a 483 bc bullet would keep him comfortably over super sonic to 1000 yards (1250 fps)

I have some 168 (496 bc) and 185 (547 bc) Hunting Hybrid VLDs I shoot in my 300 winni I may let him try out

Any ideas?

scotty- riflemansjournal has a bunch of articles on loading the 308. it is not a 30-06. a 20 inch barrel makes even more challenging to keep super sonic to 1000.

some of the low drag bullets have less bearing surface and are more particular about what barrel they are shot in.

Thanks for reply-
I know what your talking about, and that did not cross my mind.

It's funny how two bullets from the same manufacturer of the same weight and looks perform so much different. of both 155 (155.5?) VLD's one is .437 bc the other is a .483 bc. for Him to keep supersonic to 1000 comfortably he needs the .483 bc bullet to shoot good. He was dealt a bad hand so to speak.
I think he should try the 168 VLD's. No one has any in stock, but I have a box of 60-65 left over. might be able to seat to touch lands.
Why does Remington have such long throats in such a short action cartridge?
This is something Weatherby used to do, good for velocity (with hotter loads) , poor for accuracy

the 168 with a little less speed starting out and .496 bc will also do well at 1000 from his gun.

175 gr. Hunting VLD's with 42 gr. 8208 does real well in my Tac. and will go 1000 yards. COAL is just short of 2.900

The Bergers are real finicky about seating depth I found on the VLDs that the jump needs to be kept to a min. a daunting problem in a 700. I shoot 175 SMK out of a 22" Krieger on my Scapel and get 2750, no problem getting to 1000. Graf and Sons have some factory seconds for 27.99 a 100 might be worth a try 44+ grn of varget should do what you are wanting. Good luck.

He tried to seat the 155.5 Target VLD out to the rifling, but would not go.
So he just loaded to magazine length.

I explained Bergers generally do not like a jump. He is he** bent on leading to magazine length. His gun has a LONG throat. He wants to work up to 1000 yards on steel plates. I told him he needs to make a choice, load them one at a time and hit at 1000 yards, or load to magazine length and get 2.5 moa.
I told him either the 175 SMK (a local store has a few boxes) or the 168 Berger (I have some) loaded to or close to the rifling

anyone have any idea what a bullet does when it goes subsonic before (say 1000 yards) target? how much does accuracy suffer?

All rifles are diffrent and to many variables like bullet, powder, length of barrel.

Long story short when a bullet goes subsonic it destablizes and pitches and yaws more and it hurts the accuracy. How much again depends on many many factors.

Tell him to try this load and see how it shoots....Just load up 15-20 of them and let me know how it shoots...

Nosler Custom Competition 168gr HPBT bullets
44.0gr of Varget
Federal 210 primers
Hornady Match or Lapua brass (trimmed to proper length)
bullet seated to SAAMI spec of 2.810" COL

That load seems to be well liked by almost every .308 shooter I've recommended it to. My 5R .308 loves it.

Tell him to follow those directions to a T, and let me know how it shoots.

A .308 Win is supposed to be one of the LESS finicky calibers to load for. I have developed several loads that shoot like a champ out of mine, all the way up to Berget 210 VLD's, but your buddy's rifle doesn't have a tight-enough twist-rate to handle something that heavy.
