Hi. Guys .I just thought i would give my experince with my Savage .338 lapua FCP-HS. ,
This journey starts over a year ago. with me in search of a big boy gun./ we wanted to step up to a big guns for once. we have alot of experence with the smaller calibers but none with the big bores. we decided to try the Savage 338 lapua with great hopes and recomedndations but soon found out somthing differint. we started off with the break-in savage says to break-in this rifle with about 40 rounds and cleaning. we chose to shoot 300 grn SMK out of this rifle. we started to load at Coal withH1000 using Norma brass we were breaking in the gun well under min on the table . with great groups. we were stoked but when we started to get into the powder we started to have some problems at 8 grains under max we started to stick brass. so bad that we broke the abstractor out of the gun.(not good) we had to beat the brass out with a wooden doul and hammer.. so we dug into the info and found out these guns are having this problem regulary. most common with low dollar brass or ammo. so back to the factory the rifle went. after 4 months the rifle was sent back. but UPS must have droped it out of the plane at 30,000 ft because when we got it it had a broken stock and was ruined.
So back to the drawing board, we got this worked out and Savage was going to get us a new rifle.they made shure it was not going to have the same problems as the first rifle so it went to the custom shop. It was targeted and with using Blackhills Ammo was sent with a range card that Savage Said was MOA but between you and me was 1.25?
So now begins our new saga. we again break in the rifle using Norma brass 300 grn accubonds and retumbo after 40 breakin rounds 10 grains under min we started to work up load data, the max in the book is 94 and the min is 88 when we got to 87.3 brass stuck agian bad and the speeds were at 2550 . not goood. but i have to say the groups were great 1/5 moa.
so now back to Savage. with another month now of working with them they first said they would reimberse all the cost . but that didnt panout. they said to just sent back the gun but we know they wont fix it .they dont know where the proble lies with all the rifles having this probelm . i will have to say this rifle shoots great for one that is not a custom but they need to work out the kinks. we talked to lapua and black hills and we are copying thier loads except for the brass. blackhills will just send out what they get and they only use Norma and lapua. so a we decided to get ahold of some lapua brass. when we loaded it with 89 grns of retumbo, no problems what so ever with 4 rounds out the same brass just neck sized didnt crono it thought. when we talk to savage and said all they would have to do is reimberse us for the norma brass they said'' so what your saying is you bought a lambergini and are putting unleaded in it. thats your broblem. if you buy a custom gun you should expect this kind of thing''BS.
I know this is a production rifle not a custom but i will say it shoots great for being one. if they can figure out this problem and still be able to keep the accuracy then it will be great. hopefully they willl work with us more to make us have the fuzzy feling inside when being taken care of but as of right now i dought it. ill let you know when they do. i just wanted to let everyone know what we encountard.

Because this was the only way it. Wouldn't. Stick search this. Problem. In the net and you will find out its a major problem

Let me pick apart your post a bit. It's hard to read because you need to paragraph it. However....

First mistake. If you refer to the Sierra reloading data as well as Sierra's website, you will see that Sierra don't recommend 300 grain projectiles in the twist the 338 Savage barrel has.
we started to load at Coal withH1000 using Norma brass we were breaking in the gun well under min on the table .
Second mistake, never load below minimum recommended charge rates. The ballisticians at Sierra know way more about internal and external ballistics than you ever will. They get paid for it. You don't.
with great groups. we were stoked but when we started to get into the powder we started to have some problems at 8 grains under max we started to stick brass. so bad that we broke the abstractor out of the gun.(not good) we had to beat the brass out with a wooden doul and hammer..
Savage builds this rifle with a tight chamber and it's an 'extractor'btw.
so we dug into the info and found out these guns are having this problem regulary. most common with low dollar brass or ammo. so back to the factory the rifle went. after 4 months the rifle was sent back. but UPS must have droped it out of the plane at 30,000 ft because when we got it it had a broken stock and was ruined.

You seem to have a fixiation with 300 grain pills. The rifle is much happier with a 250, in fact, it will shoot appreciably better and a 250 will drop anything in North America anyway. As an aside, I never load at maximum for my 11-111. I've found the best groups are about a 2/3 load.
so now back to Savage. with another month now of working with them they first said they would reimberse all the cost . but that didnt panout. they said to just sent back the gun but we know they wont fix it .they dont know where the proble lies with all the rifles having this probelm . i will have to say this rifle shoots great for one that is not a custom but they need to work out the kinks. we talked to lapua and black hills and we are copying thier loads except for the brass. blackhills will just send out what they get and they only use Norma and lapua. so a we decided to get ahold of some lapua brass. when we loaded it with 89 grns of retumbo, no problems what so ever with 4 rounds out the same brass just neck sized didnt crono it thought. when we talk to savage and said all they would have to do is reimberse us for the norma brass they said'' so what your saying is you bought a lambergini and are putting unleaded in it. thats your broblem. if you buy a custom gun you should expect this kind of thing''BS.
It's all over the Internet about brass sticking issues. The problem lies in poor reloading practice as well as trying to cheap out on brass. It's an expensive caliber to shoot and you have to use quality brass. To that end, I only use Lapua brass and unlike you, I full length resize everythime, trim to length and anneal every third time while being aware of neck and shoulder cracking, a common occurence in the 338 caliber.

Savage builds a nice rifle in 338 but it's not a custom built rifle and never will be. The action is a bit sloppy and the 'accustock' needs some relieving to be an 'accustock'. I've never had issue one with stuck brass or brass transfer to the bolt face but then I stick to recommended reloading data and use top shelf components.

Far as I'm concerned there is no issue with the rifle. The issue lies with the end user and the parameters that user works with. the 338 is a very unfoirgiving caliber for reloading and with a tight chamber, it really necessitates careful case prep.

Your experiences are what I read all over the Internet, nothing new there. Interestingly, I've never encountered any issue, but then, I reload differently than you do.

Finally, there is a little 'ABC' with a check mark in the upper right hand corner of the post box. While it won't paragraph your post it will correct misspelled words.

^^^^+1^^^^ it's kinda getting old with everyone always rubbing it off on the gun.

I have the Savage 110ba 338 lapua and I absolutely love it! I have never had any sticky bolts I have never had a round stick in the chamber. I use lapua brass and a warm load of h1000 pushing 300gr Bergers with excellent accuracy. I also full length size every time.

thank you very much for schooling me in this appenly im a ******. i must have hurt your feeling. im sorry your being a baby. im not in any way saying my way is o the only way to do thing . it just what has worked for us for many years. all im saying is to maybe let somone else looking into these rifles to not have to go through this like we have. i wish you cauld see we are all in a hobbie that is very fun and we can help each other with problems or great secrits we have. but apperntly you dont play nice. by the way today savage said for there guns to funchine without any problems to only buy blackhills ammo or lapua and only shoot lapua brass. hands loads dont work thier not saami spec. hopefully if anyone sees this it helps them to weed out the varibles

Sounds like Savage along with may others are saying save yourself the headache and use Lapua brass in a Savage gun. I do and haven't encountered a problem yet.

Not 'schooling', just pointing out some discrepancies.

Understand something. This is a publicly viewed forum which means simply that anyone with Internet access can read your posts, for that matter, any post on this site. While you have to be registered to post, that don't mean the posts and threads can't be read...because they can and are.

So, your rant can be read by everyone, anytime. Having said that. It behooves you to make your posts grammatically correct and punctuate at least somewhat because you are trying to get a point, opinion across and the general public, reading your post will form an opinion about you by reading it.....

If it's a hard read with run on sentences and grammatical errors, those reading the post might form an opinion that you are, indeed, a ****** (as you state).

Your choice. If it was me, I'd take the time to preview any post made, correct blatant spelling errors and at least make an attempt to make the post easier to read, however, again, your choice. I nterestingly, your reply which I quoted has no less than 20 spelling errors, lacks punctuation and is hard to read.

What you post and how you present is how people view you. They don't know you other than an electronic signature. At least in my view, it's always better to present yourself in the best possible way.

In simple terms, you want to make a point, make that point in an intellegent manner.

I reazlize that your thoughts usually go at a faster pace than your typing capabilities. Thas why there is a preview pane and spell checker on most every website. Use it to your advantage.

Far as being a 'baby', I wish. I'm 63 years old, a business owner and I learned a long time ago that people view you and form opinions about you by reading what you write and how you talk to them in person.

Far as your issues with your 111, I believe a few of your issues are self induced. No Savage will ever be a Red Rock Precision or a MacMillan or even come close to a custom built firearm. What a Savage is, is a quality production firearm, production, not custom built and certainly not at a custom built price point either.

Nothing more.

With all due respect and no offense intended, my BFF had a "Salvage" 110BA 338 Lapooey and sold it, it was complete junk.

Most likely the owners opinion. I can see this thread has went from a baseless rant to something I'd rather not rerply to.....

Kindergarten mentality at it's finest.

Warning! This thread is more than 11 years ago old.
