Remington 700 7mm STW

I have been reading the thread on the 7mm STW Brotherhood and would like to join. There are not very many affordable factory rifles in this caliber. There are two Remington 700 SPS available:
Remington 700 SPS #85585, weight 7.62 lbs.

Remington 700 SPS Long Range #85600, weight 8.75 lbs.

Here is my real world question, "Does the heavy contour barrel of the #85600 make that much different?"

I want to put together a long range, 800 yard gun.

In the beginning, I have a Leupold 4.5-14 x 50 CDS to place on it. I also have a Leupold Mark 4 6.5-20 x 50 TMR rectile scope.

Any thoughts on these two rifles.

In checking around the heavy contour barrel cost about $200 more, not realy a big deal.

Another thought was to buy a 7mm Rem Mag and have it reamed out to 7mm STW.

You will have to shoot very short strings with a light barrel in either chambering. Rather than rechambering a factory barrel, you could buy a nice custom barrel from bartlein, krieger, Brux etc and be sure of getting a straight barrel with the twist you want. If you shoot a lot like I do I would get the 7 rem mag over the STW just for the barrel life. You won't be able to tell the difference at 800 yards.

I've heard that the new Remington SPS 7mm STW that Remington are currently selling are not as good as the ones Remington were making years ago.

My two Remington 700 Sendero SF 7mm STWs were manufactured in 1997 and 1998.

I absolutely love mine and both shoot less than 1/2 MOA at 100 yards.

I bought them used (they both had less than 100 rounds through them) in the past year and if I was you I would wait and try to find a slightly used either here or gunbroker.

If you are not stuck on a Remington action, there is a Savage with a heavy barrel for sale in the classified section. I do not know the seller, just letting you know.

There is also a Sako for sale too, a member in the brotherhood has it for sale.

If you want a Remington action, I would look for a Sendero. All of the ones that I now of shoot really good. As for the SPS models in 7mm stw, they have been questionable. Some have had chamber problems and others have had barrel problems.

I currently have 2 stw's, one in a Ruger #1 and the other is a Winchester Model 70 Laredo. I have owned the Ruger since new, and the Win. for a few months.

As for shooting 800 yards, if the gun groups well at a hundred yards, then 800 yards is a factor of that. A good grouping gun is what is needed, so I would want at least a 1/2" group at 100 yards.

Tom, I have a 6 mos. old Rem 700 SPS in 7STW. It's been a friggin nightmare.
After receiving a replacement gun, (which actually had all the rifling in it) and over 250 rounds, I have one bullet, one powder brand/charge, and one seat length that will shoot less than 1 minute. Everything else ranges from 2" to 4" at 100 yards. It required a new stock, skim bedded, forearm pressure restored, countless hours, and hundreds of dollars to get there.

I would NEVER buy another Rem in 7STW unless it had a med taper barrel.

You most certainly can have a 7mm RemMag chamber reamed to 7mm STW. And you will love the conversion. But to utilize the maximum potential of the catridge, you might wanna have your smith inlet the receiver for a Wyatt's 4.000" magazine box and follower. While he's got the barrel off, it will be a simple procedure instead of having to do it later.
