just curious as to where everyone favorite shot placement is on whitetail deer . i usually am a heart/lung shooter and had no problem putting the deer down, however and old timer told me the best shot is to aim high shoulder to break it down fast or if the deer was for meat not trophey a neck shot works well too. i know,,if it ain't broke,,don't fix it..just trying to get some other opinions

Where I hunt I can get a kill shot in under 30yards..I aim just behind the elbo and just above it
It takes the heart out of action they most often drop in a Half step.

I have killed a few hundred WT deer and I have found that entering on exiting a shoulder is the shot I want. Most of the time they drop in their tracks. I prefer a broadside shot in the center of the shoulder about 1/3 of the way down from the top of the back. Bang Flop. I sight my rifle in 3" high at 100 yards and that gives me a point blank hold out to 350 yards where I will not be over or under POA 3.5" and just hold center of front shoulder and with my 25-06 or 264 Win mag they usually drop in their tracks.

a shot that takes mobility away (shoulder) from the animal may be the way to go depending on location, sheep on a cliff, moose on the edge of a lake.

If anyone has info on acceptable energy levels for hunting on a variety of animals ranging from antelope to sheep and elk. What is an acceptable energy level minimum out to 1000 yards in order to kill an animal cleanly?
i shoot a 300 win mag with 168 gr Bergers leveling the muzzle at 3000 FPS , energy is at about 800 foot pounds at 1000 yards. is this enough ??

Inside 300 yards right at that sweet spot at the base of the head where it comes into the neck. Legs up every time! Out past 400 yards or moving send one right into the boiler room they don't make it 20 yds if they even take another step. A whitetail is so small as it is why would you take out half of a deer with a shoulder shot... Seems like quite the waste of meat to me.

In my opinion That a negative there ghost rider..

For me personally bare minimum of 1500 ft/lb on elk and 1200 ft/lb on deer. Then again I don't like chasing wounded critters. Specially when they have over a 1/2 mile head start on me.

Use a heavier bullet in your 300wm you will be way better off with your long range shots.

sounds good, i am in the middle of load development so i will try the heavier bullets and see what the gun likes. i like the slightly flatter trajectory or the 168 gr but my night force has lots of adjustment even with standard Talley rings. thanks for the quick response lets me know where i need to be

The Berger 210gr. pills should work great for ya. Start with 74gr of H1000 and work up. I like starting .010-.015" out of the lands, some people start .005-.010" inside the lands.

Anyways this should be a good set up for you.

good advise, thanks again i will give it a try if i can find that powder up here in alberta, canada. components can get scarce in these parts
