My question that i am wanting to get a tikka t3 lite and thinking about 7mm08 and 260rem but can not decide

-both have the almost the same recoil
-.260 has more higher BC.s
-But 7mm08 has one bullet that is higher BC. = .625 (162 amax)
-7mm08 has more components available
-260 commonly flatter than the 7mm08
-7mm08 has more energy (apparently)

Im am mostly shooting paper/gongs ect and goats

Thanks for help in advance ;)

I've shot both and liked both but if the time comes and you want to hunt something bigger where you would like the heavier bullet I would have to go with the 7-08,another thing if your buying loaded ammo you can find 7-08 just about everywhere but not so with 260rem.Atleast that the way it is here in upstate ny.

+1

The 7/08 has an advantage, all though not much .

They are both excellent choices. The 260 would be a better long range choice but not by much. The 7mm 140 Berger vld is a real performer in the 7-08. The 7-08 would get more life out of the barrel which means you could shoot more. But you will not regret either one. Good Shooting!!!

From the ballistic charts I have looked at the 7mm-08 out performs the 6.5mm 260 out beyond 600 yrds. The 260 has more match factory ammo available which is a big plus. Neither have the ammo selection that the 308 or 243 Winchester do.

I have both and they both shoot slightly below 1/2 moa with the Berger 140's in respective caliber. The 7mm08 is slightly more precise but not by much. It can get down into the 3's pretty consistently if I do my part. But that's not an every outing occurrence. I'm left handed and the world hates us. LOL. So I'm selling both mine so I can move the correct side of the gun (left handed of course) My two are APR rangers and shoot wonderfully.

Holy molely batman Matt you just revived a decade old thread lol. I have done that a few times not noticing the date on a thread in the Similar thread suggestion section. Lol

These are so practically identical its splitting hairs. Slight BC advantage for most 6.5 bullets. There should be more components and general market support for the 708. I know there are some diehard 260 fans out there, but I can see that round becoming harder and harder to obtain. The 708 seems to have more market support. Even though the 260 has some velocity advantages over the creedmoor, I would choose the creedmoor instead based on vast availability of components if you want the 6.5 cal.

For me the recommendation would come down to the game being hunted. Deer size only, 260 would be hard to beat. Elk included, i would go with the 7-08.

when comparing these two, its usually best to compare bullets with similar sectional density to get a realistic idea how they will compare. For example a 140 gr 6.5mm is similar to a 160 gr 7mm. That way the velocity comparisions, penetration comparisions will be similar.
If you compare a 140 gr 6.5mm to a 140 gr 7mm of course the 6.5 will have a BC advantage but it will also be slower in velocity….. trade offs.

for what you list however, no real reason not to go with the 260. Which by the way will top the magically powerful 6.5 creedmore by 70-100 fps with same bullet and barrel length……. Plus the tipped 260 ammo is generally easier to fit into short action mag lengths then the tipped 7mm bullets.
