berger vld or barnes for long range

Berger and use a heavy for caliber offering. They are two completely different bullets, what one gives up close, the other gives up at long range. I use Bergers because they work best for me at the longest distance I will shoot, but they also do a good job up close where I can be sure of better placement.

I have done it or my own version of Eric's many times. Results have jumped off the target at times. But always there is a noticeable difference.

I start with 3 of each, -.030~-,040" off, then -.080~-.090" off and -.120" and go from there.

Can't comment for the Elk factor, but I have dropped many whitetails at 500+ the Barnes Triple-Shocks and Accubonds over the years.

I recently started testing with Berger VLD's but have not had the chance to shoot any game with them. I will report my findings this hunting season.

For that caliber, game size, and range, I'd think the 180 VLD will be your best bet.

I have have made no attempt to hide my dislike for non controlled expansion bullets up close, but at 700yds and beyond you really don't have a choice.
You sure as hell do not want to shoot a Barnes or Accubond out of their respective expansion range or you can be guaranteed a pin hole.

As suggested by Jeff, broadside shot selection basically assures instant death even if the bullets goes off like a bomb...It just doesn't have to penetrate far at all.
For this thinking I am a 100% buyer.

The new Accubond promises to expand down to 1300fps...so there is hope yet for us controlled expansion types!
Also Kirby Allen did some long range experiments with the 265TTSX out of his 338AX. IIRC he said the BC was significantly higher than quoted at the elevated 338 Lapua improved velocities.
Anybody remember anything about that?

But for the record, We shot a quartering bull at 200 ish yards last fall with a 215 Hybrid from my 300 win. It stopped short of an exit in the front of the far shoulder with (if I remember correctly?) was 26" and I put a 1" wide tape in the wound channel when we skinned him.

I have killed a boat load of elk , deer and other game with 210 VLD's and never tracked one. But the .696 BC brought me to the 215. When I seen the accuracy of the 215 in my rifle I was pretty excited. In my opinion the 215 will expand better due to it's much larger hollow point cavity up front. I look for this for my longest shots. The antelope I took at 1285 yards was a complete pass through and exit was about 1 1/4 to 1 1/2"

Every single 215 we put into game, (19 last season) had a .308 entrance hole. Some stopped at the off side ribs, these were shots under 500 or so. But shots on antelope and deer 300 or less still exited. It seemed after 650 yards they all exited with the same .308 entrance and a nice 1 1/4 to 1 1/2" exit. I encourage people to go to that thread and see the results for their selves. It is all documented with 19 kills, same season, same rifle. There is impact velocity, distance, shot placement and terminal damage. After reviewing that thread you can then decide if the bullets performance at many different distances, on many different animals, is what you seek.
