Heya guys,

Does another caliber meet my requirements? Just looking for some input and experienced advice.
*edit* I do reload *edit*

I'm ordering a rifle from len here are going to be the meat and potatoes specs

28 or 30 inch barrel to get maximum velocity from the .308

28 in in sendero contour, 30 would be in MTU

Mcmillian stock

Long action

NO brake

Chambered in 308 win

This rifle will be mainly used for mind numbing amounts of practice by me to prepare myself to step up within the next few years to a truly long range rig.
I would like to practice up to 1000 yards. I have zero experience shooting beyond 4-500 yards, that is the limit I held myself to with the capability of my current rifle and the accuracy I could achieve with it.

In addition it will be used by my children and the women in my family for hunting from a rather nice stand on top of a hill with 600 yard shots MAX.

-I want good barrel life, i want to practice with this rifle ALOT and not worry about shooting the barrel out in 1500 rounds.

-Low recoil similar to a 308

-If i can find a range within 5 hours or so of North central arkansas that hosts F/TR events i would like to be able to shoot in them but its not a definate requirement.

-I want to be able to reliably kill whitetail from 6-700 yards. I still want sufficient energy left to kill.

Are there any other caliber choices that have similar barrel life and killing ability to the .308? While maintaining low recoil?

Some wildcat or obscure round I havent thought about?

Sorry for the wild ramling format of the post im at work and rushed on lunch break to write this.

Feel free to chime in with any advice

Thanks
Bishop

I want a long action in ordered to not be limited to what i can rebarrel to when/if i do.

Why go with a shorter barrel? The 308 is running low on steam out there close to 1k correct? Is it just personal preference or is there a reason you would go with 24/26 in?

whats the price of that going to be ? You could get the savage or rem action , have it trued up and a good trigger , a .308 12 twist 26" with 155 bergers, A barrel from most any of them, Krieger shilen, brux , broughton Lilja. or whatever and a good brake from Ross schuler screw on and off , and you would be set up with the mc millan stock assembled and accurate as hell...

action $500
true $175
trigger $200
barrel $350
chamber$200
stock $650
assemble $350
brake $100
$2500 Total +/-

Nightforce nxs $1800lightbulbSomething to think about , if you can see it you can hit it !
If you need a gunsmith to put it together I can recommend one that put something similar together for me.

Yea I have a savage short action and a remington long action to build off of, and I may do that for the next rifle. Thanks for the input though.

I guess from lack of reply's with different caliber suggestions, my choice must pretty well fit my parameters :) Makes me more confident moving forward with the build.

Thanks all

With the ladies involved you are looking for something with a light recoil. Leaves out the magnums. 7mm-08 is another good choice. Essentially just the .308 necked down. Good range of bullets to choose from with light recoil. Or you could look at the .26 calibers. they will easily get it done on a deer out to 800 yards, Light recoil and some good bullets to choose from. I have a 6.5-06. Recoil is modest. No brake and no trouble shooting 30-40 rounds in a session. 6.5X47. Very accurate and very light recoil. Still will move a 130 gr bullet over 2800 FPS. Lots of different 6.5's to choose from. The current favorite of a lot of people is the 6.5X284. Great caliber thats very shootable. The .308 will get done what you want to do. The 6.5's will have a bit more speed and shoot a little flatter. Bruce

I think 6.5 x 47 Lapua is exactly what you are looking for. Inherent accuracy, good barrel life, Lapua brass, high BC bullets, low recoil, what's not to like?

I recommend the 308 but with a 26" barrel and at least a 11 twist if not a 10 twist. This will let you get the heavier bullets with high BCs up to a good speed. With the right powder you can see 2550 to 2650'sec with the 208 Amax in a 26" barrel. This is a 700 yard deer hammer with the windage of a 260 rem. more recoil but more down range energy.

.260 Remington ( its a 6.5 mm round)
MAX of 28" barrel
Jewell trigger

Brake not needed at all.

Ive been using Brux barrels and I sure do like them

Search 7mm GT on here! It takes some time to from brass, but with 60.7 grains of H4831sc and a 29" barrel, and 180 gr Bergers I am getting a "validated" 3010 fps. and have never shot a group over 1 MOA with any load:).

It willl consistently shoot .5 MOA with fairly regular .4 and .3 groups, at 300 yds. I would even let you use my reamer:D. I really want to see someone else build one but all of my buddies are being cheapskates!:D

My rifle weighs in around 13# and kicks like a kitten, could be the weight, but even in a lighter rifle it shouldn't be bad. There are also some new 6.5 ideas on here lately that are looking pretty good, 6.5ss and some others as well. If you want a wildcat.
