I've played with the heavies before, but never with any amount of success. My one rifle had the wrong twist, and the other rifle's barrel is too short to really get any decent velocity. Not to mention it could use a new stock.

Yeah, my 5R should eat them up.....Perfect combo for the heavies....5R rifling, 11.25" twist, and a 24" barrel. Oughtta be perfect for those bullets, in theory. It loves the 168's and 175's.

I'll be heading to the range in a little while (they don't open till 1 on Sundays), so I will post my findings.

Ok......First off, I'd like to appologize for not getting pics, but the bottom was fixing to fall out of the sky right as the day ended.

Now, on to the 210 Berger VLD's......with them seated @ 3.060", with 39.1gr of Varget, and Fed 210 primers, i was shooting 1/2-3/4" 3-shot groups once you subtract the bullet width. I'd say the ole 5R loves them. I will definitely be buying a box of them this week to load up more of them.

Are you shooting them out of an AR or Bolt Gun ? I am looking for a go to bullet for my AR I thought about the 175 SMK or 168 A-MAX or 190 Berger Ahhh Choices ?

If you're stuck on Berger I'd start with the 190 VLD and move up to the 210. Running VV N550 and the 208 amax I'm getting 2600'sec with sub 1/4 MOA out of 2 different 308s. One 24"-12x and one 26"-11x. I get 2500 from the 24" and 2600 from the 26" barrel. I don't see much difference between the 208 and 210. The only reason I prefer the 208 is that they expand at lower velocities.

The high BCs of the 190 VLD to the 210s makes the 308 a formidable rifle for up to and beyond 1000 yards for paper. I have yet to shoot the 208 to a grand but having shot the 190 SMKs to a grand in VERY cold low level dense air with outstanding success, I can imagine what the 208 would do in warm air at or beyond 1K. Heck their only 64'sec slower than my old 190 load. At dall sheep altitude and temps it works out to 1150 pounds of energy and 58" of 10mph wind at 1K. I don't care what other shooters say, that is a legitimate 1K deer, sheep, antelope and caribou rifle/load combo.

Unfortunately, I am using a Remington 700 5R bolt-action rifle with a 24" barrel with an 11.25" twist with 5R rifling. It's a factory production rifle.

I don't know if I'd shoot this load out of an AR......It's got some good recoil pushing that big ole pill with that much powder and pressure behind it.

It might be ok if you put a special HD buffer and spring in it, but as far as load development for AR's I'm the wrong guy to ask. LOL

I have 2, but one is 5.56 and the other is being built for 300 Blackout. So, I wish I could help you man, but unfortunately I can't.

Maybe checkout tye AR-10/AR-15 section....Someone there can probably help.

In near zero temps at 725 yards they punch holes slightly less than perfect. In warmer temps its no problem. 12 is anything but optimum but it works for the most part. I know other guys that use it. As long as its not too cold and if there is any altitude involved they punch straight holes. Even in the the cold they're still very accurate at that distance.

I have been shooting the 168 Hybrid for 500 and 600 yrd. F-TR Class and that bullet is just really accurate. My best string at 500 so far is a 199-10X out of 200 and believe it or not my last shot was a 9 ( nerves got to me ). I went to the Ballistic seminar put on by Brian Litz the day before the 600yrd mid range match at the Berger South West Long Range Nationals in Feb. at Ben Avery. It was also a range testing day which I thought was going to be at 600 yrds, but to my surprise it was at WHAT!!! a 1000yrds. I said I wasn't set up to shoot that far and asked Brian what he thought. He said with my load, 43 grs of Varget at 2750 fps I should be OK.
From my 500 yrd Zero I dialed in 22.5 MOA and was 8 in high and about 12 inches to the left. After I got sighted in I ran 20 just for practice and shot a 170 out of 200 and my target puller said they all made round holes in the target.

But most of the guys are shooting the 185 gr Hybrids for a 1000 yrds, so I bought some but haven't got to do any testing yet.
