First time on the handgun hunting forum. If this has been done before, please post the thread with revolver pictures? I would like to see revolvers especially big bores, custom .45 colts, and customs such as the big linebaughs. I have a freedom arms .475 linebaugh, but would really like to go with a custom based off a blackhawk. Just looking for ideas.

Thanks

Welcome,

Well it's not a custom and not what you called a big bore but is set up a bit different than most. Using a VGM mount and a 2 1/3 - 8 Leupold pistol scope.

Used for testing and experimenting long range shooting with a revolver. Last pin setting on the VGM mount is set for 500 yards. It's only a pip squeek 44 magnum but is amazingly accurate even at those distances. Plan this summer to redo the pin settings and keep stretching it out.

Let me know what components and stuff you use for your 460 s&w. I have the 12" version and haven't set it up yet or loaded it. I bought it to customize and shoot like you do. Are you going to do any trigger work on it? Please post pics...

Thanks,
Ed

Since this photo I have out on a weigand stainless steel scope base. Only thing I can find for loading components as of now are 275gr barnes and 300gr speer deep curls nothing else at this time available. Bout to get started on loading up test rounds. Next is scope: my choices are burris 2-7x32 or a Nikon eer 2-8x28. That's where I'm at as of now. If anyone else has suggestions or load info that would be great. I will keep posted as I move along.

Do those pistol scopes have good relief, full arms length? I'm looking for a good scope now too. Does the Weigand base fit really nice, look good?

Here's my limited edition (only 5000 made) S&W Classic Hunter 8 3/8" in 44mag with Leupold base and rings holding a 2x Leupold pistol scope (long eye relief with good field of view at arms length). It shoots 1moa at 100yards.

Killed my first deer with this beast!

The burris shows an eye relief of 10"-21". The Nikon shows an eye Relief: 12-30"-9-13"
This is the weigand for the x-frame

I think the weigand base fits much nicer than the warne. I see many have the warne but I do not like having that much base hanging over the barrel unsupported. The weigand just fits better in my opinion.
Bullets of choice are:
any of the barnes
Only the xtp "mags" if it doesn't say mag then it is not appropriate for the 460.
Speer deep curl (formerly gold dots just renamed) the only one suitable is the 300 grain unless you are loading the 460 to 45 long colt velocity as the other speer deep curl or gold dots will come apart at 460 velocities
My choices are the 275gr barnes and the 300gr deep curls and H-110 and AA#9. I have read to stay away from the light bullets as they cause forcing cone erosion and top strap flame cutting along with the use of Lil'gun powder which has been known for really high flame temps which speed along flame cutting and cone erosion. The one good thing about Lil'gun is it runs considerably low pressures, but with those extreme flame temps, ill pass on it. You can do some searching as well one is " the truth about Lil'gun". Other searching can include 460 S&W loads of the variants will get you some info there is a lot of info on some components and not much for the others as in the 275gr barnes and 300gr deep curls Just is not much on those for some reason. I'm just not a fan of the xtp's or the light barnes. Any more questions feel free to ask ill try to help as much as I can.

No. I don't think I will be doing any trigger work on it as it is IMO super light as is. It is lighter than some of my rifles. Very light and crisp

Thanks for keeping up this post. I have the longer barrel, I think either 12+ or 14+, just starting to work loads and such. Keep me posted as to what you are finding works best. I like your bullet selections and the powder makes sense too. Of the 2 scopes you talked about, which seems most appropriate, my range is in the 25-125 yard area.

Thanks,
Ed
