New guy here from the snowbound land of Minnesota. Sorry if this thread has been brought up before, I'm still getting the hang of navigating the site. I've been following LRH for several years but haven't poked around much. Great website!

Anyways, on to the question.

I'm a 2nd, soon to be 3rd year gunsmithing student. This fall i have a barreling and Chambering class and for one of my 3 master barrels I"m looking into an ELR build. I've been a 408CT fan since it hit the streets (even a little before.) Exceptional BC, great velocity and energy and considerable accuracy at distance. However, after poking around I'm seeing some advantages with the 375CT over the 408. My goal for the build (and the school for that matter) is to build a rifle capable of putting 3 shots in a man-sized target at 3000 yards. I was planning on going with a Stiller action and either a Bartlien or Saturn barrel. I'd go with Krieger but they're 9 months back-ordered and i don't have that much time. a Jewel trigger, custom brake, and an aluminum stock i'll machine myself for out prototyping class will top everything off. Other rounds im considering at either the 338AM or the 375AM. I know this build will be both extensive and quite expensive but its my build i wanna come out of school with and say i accomplished something that was dang hard to do. Optics will have to wait because i cant just come out of college and drop $2000 on a brand new Nightforce 12-42x56mm NXS.

Questions, comments, concerns, snide remarks, and constructive criticism are all appreciated!

Just want to say congrats on the years in gunsmithing
Class. Your build maybe hard to do but I think the finished
Rifle will be worth the time etc.. and fun as well. Good luck

hopefully Kirby Allen chimes in for you as he would have great advise, but he is very busy Good luck with build

It definitely counts. No use doing something if ya don't
Enjoy it. I would love to get into gunsmithing and building
Rifles but my existing job makes that hard to do at this moment. Are you taking classes at a college or a gunsmithing school. I have looked at AiG I believe it is called.

Congrats on your gunsmithing courses, don't take this wrong if you can't afford to
purchase a nightforce scope, cases and bullets will keep you in hock for these chey-tac cartridges. Dies also get expensive along with tools to trim and a press. Then learning to shoot at 3000yds will also be expensive........good luck

.

I would go with a 338 just from the standpoint of bullet selection and availability.
I don't think it gives up that much to the 375, and I am not sure if all the bugs are worked out of the 375 as well.
Good luck with your build.

Thanks. I've considered the 338-408 or the 338AM. I've heard the accuracy at extreme distance is outstanding. Im not going for stopping power or max terminal ballistics, im going for accuracy. Pure, raw, no-holds-barred, no corners cut accuracy at extreme distances. To me, being able to place a single shot precisely where it needs to be is much more important that energy.
