What are the differences between a silencer and a suppresor ? Are they the same ? Which one would be better ? How are they built ? Or what kind of material are they made of ? What does the inside of one look like ? I saw one the other day and it was called a "Can" . I would like to know all I can about these different styles that are availible. Thanks for your insight....

They are the same. Check out HTG silencers. Expensive and have to be registered. Small calibers are very quite. Larger calibers are a bit louder but still make a huge difference.

Owning a supressor/silencer legally all depends on what state you reside in. Here, it's a 10 year felony to possess and suppress.

Not saying you can't just don't get caught or be discrete. You can make a home brew one from an oil filter shoved over the muzzle and shot through the bottom in about 20 seconds for a couple bucks....

There are numerous ways to get into a supressor cheap but I'm not going into that because I'm not a potential felon.

All one has to have is a basic knowledge of machining and a lathe and some apporopriate stock.

Nothing inside a suppressor but sound attenuating material, sometimes spaced discs, sometimes discs and fiber packing material.

If they were legal to possess here, I'd just make my own and save the money.

Suppressor, silencer, can, all the same thing. The correct term is suppressor.
There are many types of designs and they are made out of many different materials. Some use a stack of baffles and some use a mono core. The lovely ATF has decided we aren't allowed to own them without registration and them getting there cut so a supressor is classified as an NFA item. There is a $200 tax stamp that must be purchased for every transfer. I offen here others that have a false understanding the fee is annual. It isn't. If you can legally own a firearm you can legally own a suppressor. (providing you live in a suppressor friendly state.)

But....why pay even 10 bucks when a Fram Extraguard (can) costs about 3 bucks at Wallyworld and a home made adapter is a lathe turn away?

When it gets noisy, screw on another.....

Dont worry guys If I wasnt going to go the leagl route , then I would have never asked about them on an open forum for all to see.

We have a guy hear in Nebraska that sells them for a reasonable cost and can get the well made ones as long as the less inexpensive ones.
He specializes in them. Reaper Arms is the name his company is called.

Silencers are like a car muffler. You can get an expensive one at Auto Zone or a cheap one at Midas. They all do the same thing at different prices. It comes down to the wrapper and what you want the thing to look like.....lol

An adapter that is made to allow a oil filter to be used as a suppressor is considered a suppressor under federal law, and big fines and the big house are the penalty. There was a firefighter that used a 2-liter bottle taped to a 22 to silence the gun so he could shoot his dogs, all so he could go on vacation. As far as I heard, no federal charges were brought on him.

edit; the suppressor only works on the expanding gasses. It will do nothing about the sonic crack of a supersonic bullet, unless you slow that bullet down to subsonic velocities.

You said a mouthfull. While I would never encourage anyone to utilize a Fram Extra-Guard as a muffler, it can be done, easily, but thats between you and your auto parts store.....

The firefighter should have his personal hose clamped in a vise IMO. I really dislike anyone who does harm to a domesticated animal, especially dogs. I like my dogs more than most people I know.

There are a buch of other, much less obnoxious things that can be used bit I won't get into that on a public forum.

Lets just say that I've experimented in the privacy of my own compound.

tinman, you mentioned "sonic crack" of a supersonic bullet. I guess a supressor on a .338 lapua or .300 Ultra would only supress the noise to were you would not give away your location say from 1000 to 1600 yards out ? Could a person shoot one on these 2 guns that I have mentioned , without loaded beyond supersonic ? Just wondering.....
