Trying to decide between a savage 110 hs precision 300 win mag or a rem 700 300 um sendero. I plain on shooting long range (600- as far as I get good enough to shoot to) and want something I do not have to put a bunch of extra work into the gun. I like the ultra mag bc I could shoot the heavier 200-220gr bullets better but I like the savage gun better. What are your opinions?

Either one will probably work fine. I would go with the 300 RUM Sendero. I have one and it's been a great shooter.

Run the ballistics on the 2 and see what you think. . . I was not impressed with the RUM as it was only running about 100 FPS faster. For the extra cost and difficulty finding supplies I decided to go with the WM. With the 210+ bullets it is very impressive. . . And you like the Savage better!

300 UM is a monster, but you won't regret 300 WM for availability of ammo, parts and supplies. WM will do the job for less $ long term and long range. If you're ever in a remote area and need factory ammo or to borrow ammo in a pinch, chances are better of finding it with the WM. WM will shoot 200 gr just fine--NP's, Sierra BT's ,Swift A-Frames, or 210 gr VLD's, if you prefer. You can even shoot WM up to 240 gr Woodleigh's (Doubletap) if needed, depending on how the gun is set up. Some say you'll never need more than 180 gr TTSX anyway.

I think the only real draw back to a 300WM might be the inability to seat bullets way out to the lands and still fit them in a mag box. . .
The Savage should shoot as good as the Sendero from the box too, I would guess. Most guys will swear at me for saying that, but Savage is building quite a track record.

Unless they've changed in the recent few years, Savage mag boxes won't fit rounds much beyond SAAM OAL specs. My buddy's .300 WM Sendero's mag box will. I still have a half box of 3.52" reloads he gave me that I have to single feed...but with .300 WM, who needs more than one anyway? I get great accuracy with many factory loads that fit fine.

I've got both the 300 win and 300 rum. The rum will put 10% more bullet weight out at the same speed using similar powders. If you up the anty and put a heavier pill in the rum using slower powders, it'll get up to 20% more bullet to the same speed as the win mag-- either one of them( long or WSM) for that matter.

I have a Savage stainless 300 RUM with a blind mag if you want to get into a Savage 300 RUM for less than a new Sendero, considerably less. Mine has a similar profile to the Sendero. With the 300 RUM, you can load hot or down to a 300 wm, that's a real advantage no one is mentioning here. Case capacity is larger. Also, you can re barrel to a 338 edge off the case. In general Savage is cheaper to re-barrel as you can do it yourself. Let me know if you want a picture? How much are you looking to spend?

Aside from the round itself, nobody has mentioned triggers in this comparison. I have a Savage in 7mm rm but have not quite gotten used to the Accutrigger yet. The Sendero has Rem's single stage crisp trigger which I'm more used to, similar to Browning and others.
The thing I've noticed about the Accutrigger is that if you are getting ready for the shot, if you slowly pull the "first trigger" the pressure of it on your finger kind of masks the feeling in your finger when you make contact with the "second" trigger making the final snap less determinate that you might expect. I don't know if anyone else has experienced it but it seems to fit in with other somewhat related psychological perception tests I've read about.

Can the mag of the savage be changed out very easy for one that can fit longer rounds if so aprox how much would this cost?
I can get into the savage for a very good price so leaning that way but if the longer bullets will not work in the mag and no way of fixing with out going to single shot then the 700 might be the way to go. ??????
To throw another thing out there I already have a rem 700 7mag that I could go with but it does not like the heavier bullets and by the time I rebarrel and re stock it I could get into a new one that will do what I want. I just don't know. Appriceate all the responses keep them commimmg.

The mag box of a Sendero (Std Ren LA) is about 3.710.
I don't know the length of a Savage box, maybe some one else can chime in.
When seating to just off the lands in a Sendero 300 RUM, I was unable to load 180 Tips and 210 Bergers into the box. It would have been possible with a Wyatts extended box.
