K guys talk me into one or the other. From what can see is the difference is the LRP has a 26in barrel, varmit hunter has 24in. LRP has a HS Precision stock and the VH has qn accustock. Trigger on the LRP is a Target accutrigger and the VH is the basic accutrigger. The LRP I can get for $999 or the VH is $861 out the door. So is the extra $220 ish worth it??

In my opinion yes. Where can you buy an HS precision stock for $220 dollars. Do you like a trigger lighter than 2.5#?
I think the LRP will be slightly heavier, but if this is not an issue to you I think its a no brainer. And who doesn't want the performance from 2 extra inches?

Ya im pretty sure thats whats gonna get purchased today as I got to have it before the nephews B-Day. I dont think the extra weight will be a big deal, he is a 7th grader and weighs about 155. Im really shocked at what people are asking for used LRP's. over a $1000 used and you can buy BRAND NEW for $999.

I have two 112's and one model 12. I'm 6'1' 175# and they are not easy to shoot off handed. So I think a 7th grader may be limited to bipod and rest positions only. However, I got my first 112 FLVSS at age 11-12 so maybe he can do it.
The LRP is not meant to be shot off handed anyway, so I would buy it!

Out here in the west is not a place to shoot off hand as its WIDE OPEN. He has hunted with my Gordy Gritters heavy barreled .243 with a mounted bipod the past couple years and its been fine. Right now im dumbfounded at the asking prices of used LRP's.

I'd go with the LRP but that takes some additional explanation.

I and a friend have identical Savage 260 Rem model 12 LRPs. Our latest thing is shooting golf balls at 800 yards. We miss most shots but they shoot well enough that you aren't just wasting ammo trying this. They also don't get hot with round after round down the tube. The HS precision stock is the best you can get on a Savage. All good right?

There is a problem however. Full up with scope it weighs 14.2 pounds. It has a no taper target barrel which makes it very front heavy and it is NOT a good choice for a hunting rifle unless you won't be walking around with it.

Having said that, if you do what I did you can have a dual use target/hunting rifle for little extra money. By an extra barrel and bolt assembly. I bought a large shank 26 inch varmit contour stainless barrel in 270 WSM that I can plug in. This makes the gun into a nicely balanced yet heavy hunting rifle that will shoot neck and neck with the 270 Weatherby Mag. (I bought the factory new barrel off Numrich's site for $95 - under the 110 model info.)

Not to be nit picking, but do you mean predator hunter instead of varmint? Just want to make sure because I am currently making the same decision with those two and also the lrh. I am also trying to decide between the 260 and the 6.5x284. Not trying to steal your thread, just waching for others opinions and to see what you decide, and why.

Thanks for the dual barrel setup idea. I might get one for my 12LRP.

12LRP is way too heavy for hunting if hiking is involved. I would look into 111 Long range hunter.

Ur exactly right i got them mixed up. Predator hunter is what I was deciding between and also was trying to decide on either the .260 & 6.5x284. Right now the .260 is in the lead for the fact u can use several different calibers cases and resize.

I'm stil torn, the .260 is cheaper to shoot and is more readily available for brass, but the 6.5-284 is about 200fps faster. Notice I said about, depending on loads of course. I was kinda leaning toward the 6.5-284 just for the speed and that might make a diff for long range. Again not trying to steal your post, I'll just sit back and watch your results now that I gave my .02 worth.

I own a Savage LRP in 260 that I use for targets, a LRH in 6.5x284 for game out to 1000 yards, and a Predator in 22-250 for varmints. All three hold .25MOA, sometimes better, at 500 yards. For me, while I like heavy rifles and shoot mostly prone, the LRP is way too heavy and off balanced for hunting if any kind of walking around is required. It's a great target rifle though. Looking at all three rifles, the perfect Long Range hunting rig would have the HS stock and trigger of the LRP and the barrel taper of the Predator in the LRP's length in 26" instead of 24". I'm partial to the 6.5x284 because of the additional 200-300 yards of terminal performance compared to the 260. The stocks on the Predator and LRH, while they work, are very cheaply made, and usually need some touching up with the barrel channel to fully float the barrel.. IMO.

I agree, perfect gun would be the predator hunter with the 26in barrel with the HS stock. The predator hunter doesnt come in 6.5x284 so .260 is the only option. The long rang hunter does but doesnt have a detatchable magazine.

I believe the Predator is available in 6.5x284 with. 24" barrel. If it were available when I bought my LRH, I would have probably bought it instead.even at 24" I'm able to get 2970FPS with 140 gr. VLD's out of my 24" LRH which is fine.

See if cabelas has a model 116 stainless in 6.5 x 284. That is what I wound up with. They had them 300 WM and 6.5 284. I had ordered a 111 LRH in .260 and 6.5 x284 but the dealer screwed around and didn't order when he said he would. A buddy found this rifle at Cabela's for me and I promptly bought it instead of waiting 3 more months. It is has the varmint contour with flutes and is stainless. It is only a 24" barrel but with the NF scope it is just a tad over 11 lbs. Seems to shoot fine and I don't mind the weight.
