forming 6.5x284 brass?

I'm sure this has been discussed before, but I'm wondering about forming .284 brass to 6.5x284. I know it is probably better to buy Lapua brass, but I'm looking to go a little cheaper for now. I think in a previos forum someone said it was fine to take .284 brass and run it through the 6.5x284 sizing die. Any and all comments appreciated. Also, how much brass would be expected to be trimmed after sizing?

Funny, there is another thread where someone is necking down from 30 to 7mm and asking questions.

I'll repeat the suggestion again here: you can use a standard 6.5-284 seating die (wouldn't use a comp die) to partially step down the neck. It may not be necessary but it takes less force on the press handle and in some situations is necessary to prevent damaging the brass.

You said seating die, not sizing die?

Yes seating die. It is larger than the FL die and makes a great inbetween step if needed.


Think about it, it is sized to allow FL sized brass to slide without binding it when seating a bullet. The neck dimension is smaller than 7mm but slightly larger than the dimension the FL sizer will size. It isn't alway necessary but many wildcatters know ways to help size brass more easily with less ruined cases. You may not need it in this situation but it is something to file away.

Big problem would be finding brass and you may have better luck finding 6.5x284 beside Lapua Hornady and Nosler makes 6.5x284 brass.

I found some 284 Win. brass and ran it thru my Redding 6.5x284 FL die. Then these were neck turned, flash holes deburred, necks chamfered and polished. The results were good and ready for reloading. If you can find the brass go for it. MTG

Thanx guys. Looks like hornadys are a good option as well. I think I'll op to buy the 6.5-284 brass. My buddy has ffl so I can save some cash ordering them through him.
