so i just bought a remington sps varmint in 22-250. i had some loaded rounds from a different rifle using 55 gr nosler BT and H380 powder that i used for bore sighting. i thought i would try some of the new nosler varmageddons with the flat bases and the polymer tips. i tried loads with varget and h380 and all the the bullet holes in with the varmegeddon were oblong and appearded not to stabilize, but the Nosler BT looked fine. the barrel is a 14 twist. does this sound right, would a flat base make a difference like this. i would think a 14 would stabilize a 55 gr bullet. thanks in advance.

The 14 twist is for a bit lighter bullet. It will do better with a 40 grain. It is possible that it will shoot a 50grn. Just have to try. I shoot a 22-250 with a 1 in 12 twist it will shoot a 50 ro 55 grn great!

Sure your load is developing enough pressure to drive it fast enough ? I have shot 55gr Vmax bullets out a 1:12 223 so I would have thought that with all the extra powder in a 22-250 you should have no problem ? The Hodgdon manual says 38-41 gr of 380 to yield 3500 to 3700fps from a 24" barrel. The same bullet in my 223 is listed as going 2800-3100fps and it was fine in a 12 twist. I'm pretty sure I was not at a max load either.

I have a 22-250 in 1:14 and have never had any issue stabilizing 55gr bullets, but I don't think any were flat base . . .

50's proved to be more accurate for me and I stuck with them.

i used 37 38 and 39 grains of 380 to start with. and 35 36 and 37 gr of varget. showed no pressure signs. new brass, remington lr primers. i thought it was strange that the boat tail ballistic tips flew fine or appeared and shot ok as well. but the flat base varmageddon were all over the place and created oblong holes. leads me to belive it has to do with the flat base design some how. just wondering if im missing something.

Seems like you are a ways off a max load though, might try bumping it up. You might just need a bit more speed. The flat base may be more sensitive to any damage at the crown than a BT.

had the same issue with a Rem. VLS 22-250. Wound up shooting a 45gr jacketed hollow point to get it down to about .5. Now the rifle is going through a transformation to an almost custom gun. Going with a 1 in 8 Benchmark barrel to play with the heavy bullets.

I shot a buddies 22-250 sps varmint with 14 twist. Shooting 55g hornday varmint express. 1 1/2" @ 100 was as tight a group as I could shoot.

haha not a whole lot of positive reinforcement. but i didnt notice any visible damage to the crown just by looking but i will do the q tip check when i get home. i dont really think the crown was damaged cuz it actually shot the BTs pretty decent for not experimenting at all. shot 2 three shot groups that were between .75 and 1 moa. it leads me to beleive that it has a bit of promise. i guess my next step is try some different lighter bullets. im thinking a 52 gr HPBT match from sierra. do you guys think that 3 grains will make a difference. i dont really want to go down to 40 but i wil if i have to.

i really think the gun will shoot with alittle work. im just looking from some starting points since this is completely stock. the stock is no good and the x mark trigger in my opinion is pretty bad. got a trigger ordered and in time will definately upgrade the stock and bed the action. i think that will help some too.

does anyone know roughly how much it costs to recrown your barrel?

we have shot 50 , 55 , 60 and 63 grain bullet out of several remingtons no problem. the flat base you are taliking about is a shorter bullet than the BT so it would/should require a SLOWER twist. 35.5 of benchmark and a 50 balistic tip- .5" in 5 different remington 22-250s. average velocity was 3907. the 50s and the 63s were better than the others but our testing was not extensive. if the 14 twist was too slow the 63s would not group into .5". trying a 52 or 53 grain match bullet ( hornady, sierra, speer , berger) with the accuracy load from sierra manual would be good.

The 14 twist is for a bit lighter bullet. It will do better with a 40 grain. It is possible that it will shoot a 50grn. Just have to try. I shoot a 22-250 with a 1 in 12 twist it will shoot a 50 ro 55 grn great!

I shoot 55 grain Hornaday Vmax bullets all the time in my .223 with a 14 twist barrel. It shoots in the mid fours all day long. The Vmax has a B/C of .255, and I'd imagine the Nosler is close.

like i said the ballistic tip with the boat tail flew fine and had accuracy potential. the varmageddon with the flat base key holed and shot all over. like 4-5 in groups. im thinking the gun just doesnt like the bullets
