Just wondering why folks go with 338 edge over other 338's like Laupa or even the 300 RUM? I understand u must "neck up" a 300 RUM case. Is that difficult to do?

"Necking Up" the brass is not hard at all. I have only been reloading for less than a year and the process is pretty simple. When using 300/375 ultra brass to make your edge brass requires a hefty use of sizing oil that first sizing. I have a 300 ultra so I had a ton of brass to get me started. You can either buy edge dies or go the economical route and get some 338 rum dies and a 375 rum full length sizer. Set up your 338 rum die to only size the neck, barely kissing the shoulder, and take your new, neck sized brass and run thru the 375 GUTTED full length sizer die. I had to wait on the 375 dies, so the brass I have been running has only been neck-sized in a 338 rum die. Guys on here say you can get a few reloads before a Full length sizing is necessary

I'd say that if you get a shoulder bump from your 338 RUM die you should be able get the maximum life from your case without ever having to full length size it.

My next build will be a 338 Edge. Donor action is a Weatherby Mark V.

Why Edge vs RUM. Performance expectations. For 338 RUM, Remington shortened the case to prevent miss chambering or some other nonsense. The Edge retains full 300 RUM capacity so the Edge is 'faster'.

Why not 338LM. No bolt modifications required. Not as 'overbore' as 300RUM or 338LM and my gunsmith prefers it that way.

Have not chosen the barrel yet. Douglas, Hart, Lilja, Shilen or Pac-Nor. I have 3 Pac-Nor 3L barrels now. Very, very happy with them so ++ for Pac-Nor.

Actually, there is an im portant bolt modification necessary to go to the Lapua from a RUM. The bolt face of the Lapua is larger than the standard magnum bolt face and it will need to be opened up to around a .600 diameter.

You miss read my post. I'm going with 338 Edge because no bolt modifications.

I know the LM requires it.

With the gun ban agenda of the UN and that socialist psycho obuma, I would stay away from anything "military" ....

we may end up like some European countries where the 338 Lapua is banned from civilian use for being a military cartridge...
it's tagged heavily for its "sniper" history

that is why I built a 338 Edge and not the 338 Lapua......

I also set it up so I can switch barrels and can run the 7mm Rum, 300 Rum and 375 Rum factory take off barrels which you can get cheap from gunsmiths

I have a different reason for choosing a 338 edge. I have a expensive 27" SS fluted #5 lilja with a muzzle brake chambered in 300 RUM that is wearing out. When the time comes I can have it rebored/rerifled to 338 and simply open up the neck of the chamber to make a 338 Edge. This will save me a ton of money and no extra modifications will be necessary. Cost to have it rebored/rerifled is approx $225.

I have shot a 338 Lapua improved for many years in a single shot custom rifle. I also have that same model rifle in a repeater in a 338 Edge.

For the gain of only 150 fps of the Lapua Improved over the Edge, when it came time to make some new brass for the Lapua Improved, I decided to pull the barrel and have it shortended and to have another barrel chambered to give me a single shot in a different caliber vice having an Edge and a Lapua Improved.

Simjply put, they both work and after shooting both, I like the Edge better.

While the Edge is a nice cartridge the only time when you will see a difference from the .338 RUM is when you get into the 28" tubes and up so for a hunting rifle that is enjoyable to pack the RUM serves plenty well, with the Lapua has to burn more powder to achieve the same performance as the RUM or Edge so is it really worth the extra powder for little gain in performance? I will not get into the recoil part as if you are recoil shy then these cartridges aren't really for you maybe a 6.5 Grendel or something would be better suited ! LOL!!! Just playing don't get all upset please!
