Hey guys. It's been a while since I've been on. Been workin a lot. I checked with Rock creek last week and my barrel should be shipped next week or the week after. I've got detachable bottom metal to accommodate 3.775" magazines. I will be shipping all the components to jack keister at accurate arms in Virginia when I receive my barrel from rock creek. I just can't decide on which chambering I want to run either .338RUM or .338 EDGE. I want the best performance and reliability. I will be shooting the banded copper solids and brass banded bullets and the berger's and the Sierra's. I want to be able to precision reload for seating depth so precision micrometer die sets will be a deciding factor as well as long range precision performance of the cartridge itself. I want to be able to engage targets out to ONE MILE and MAYBE BEYOND!!!! I will only be hunting with it out to a thousand no more than 1,300 as my skills increase but I want .338 Lapua ballistics or better! I want a true long range precision rifle for hunting/tactical/ and competition applications! Thanks for the input guys.

Also the stock it will be in is a highly modified B&C A-5 that is identical to a McMillan A-4 and the receiver is a Remmy 700 standard long action magnum that Dave is going to modify the ejection port on front and rear similar to a stiller so the longer projectiles will eject if not fired. Barrel contour is AMU/MTU fluted that is going to finish at 28" threaded with a muzzle brake in the meantime and will then be suppressed with an elite iron or thunder beast suppressor. I'm running a nightforce 40MOA one piece steel base bedded to my receiver with marine tex and the optic I will be running is the new nightforce B.E.A.S.T. 5-22/56 with 34mm tube and .1 mil increments.

338EDGE over 338RUM because of brass. 338Edge is reformed Remington 300Rum and like the 338Rum brass life is three reloads before primer pockets get loose.
Now with the 338Edge head stamped brass Shawn Carlock is getting from Bertran Bros brass life is like what you get from 338 Lapua which 15 or more reloads primers are still good.
Using the Remington action it will take the 338Edge but will work for the 338Lapua.
For me it's a not brainer 338Edge with Bertran head stamped brass from shawn Carlock will do what you want.
IMO Charlie gun)

Sounds like you are going to have one heck of a rifle.

The case capacities of three popular 338s are: 108 gr for the Lapua, 110 gr for the RUM and 113 gr for the Edge. Not enough difference to amount to a hill of beans in my opinion. My 338 is a full custom build, Krieger barrel, Accurate Innocations stock, etc. so I could have picked any of them. The RUM is noted for accuracy and is a factory standard so I went with that.

I've got a couple of different loads that me and the gun have been able to fit into 0.75" at 200 yards. I'm thinking if you took me out of the equation that it might shoot a bit better than that. My first attempt at 600 yards put 3 into 2.187" so I'm feeling good about my choice but there are stories out there of guys stacking bullets on top of bullets with all of these. My nephew is in process with an Edge build as we speak. He went with a 30 inch Krieger. I wanted to actually be able to carry my gun out hunting so I went with 26.5". I don't think you can go wrong with either.:)

Yes the 338 RUM brass from Remington sucks big time. Loose primer pockets all the time. Since switching to Nosler brass I have lost zero cases. Also, the case weight variation on a lot of Nosler brass is 1.0 gr total but it does cost more.:)

So overall the .338 edge would be my best choice? Yes I could go Lapua but the aftermarket PT&G one piece fluted bolt I have for the build has a magnum bolt face of .532 which will also work with the RUM an Edge which has a bolt face of .534 instead of the Lapua bolt face. And as far as long range terminal ballistics I think the edge will perform identical too, if not better than, the Lapua out of my 28" 5R rock creek barrel with the solid copper alloy banded solids.

I vote 338RUM since you are so limited by your magazine length. Going to the Edge with the bullets crammed deep won't gain you much.

Brass isn't an issue for me. With a simple size and trim you can use any of the brass mentioned above.

So what would be an ideal seating "range" for the .338 edge? I can sell my bottom metal and get the next largest size which is the largest made which is CIP length 3.850 which is the bottom metal setup that requires butchering up the bottom of the receiver for proper feeding. Would this be the best way to go for the edge?

Hey Shawn carlock. Could you give me some info and advice on this issue since you are the expert, per say? I want a weapon platform that is capable of consistent one mile accuracy and terminal performance and dead on repeatability everytime as long as the shooter does their part! I want the weapon platform to be able to outperform me at my best!!! What bottom metal should I go with, 3.775" or 3.850"? Should I have my smith chamber it with a lot of freebore similar to the weatherby's or standard freebore? Thanks guys. Oh by the way ,Shawn, my smith is jack keister out at accurate arms in Virginia.

+1, Especially on the new brass from Carlock, that is a game changer! Got mine a couple weeks ago:)

The COL of my 300/338 Edge is 3.785.

What kind of setup are you running, repeater or single shot and DBM or internal magazine? If your running DBM are you running the 3.850"? If so, did you have to modify the bottom of your receiver for proper and reliable feeding?

I have a 338 Edge with a 26"#4 Hart barrel. I have a Wyatt's extended box magazine, in a HS precision stock. The magazine is internal and it is a repeater. Personally I shoot single shot most of the time anyway. This rifle was built by Shawn Carlock of Defensive Edge and lives up to his reputation as a builder.
