cost to reload .338

hey guys, i have a buddy that wants to try his hand at the .338 game but doesnt know where he wants to start. He has shot his .300win mag and .300rum alot over the years and wants to step up to a .338

only problem is..the cost of ammo! Which .338 is the most cost efficient out of the RUM, LM, and edge? I was leaning more towards the rum, but i dont know much anout the .33' s. i stay with my .300' s but he wants to launch the 300gr bergers or Sierras over 2600fps if possible. Thanks guys!

I don't think there will be much of a difference between his 300 RUM and ANY 338. Pretty much the same amount of powder, same primers, same cost on dies, and there isn't that much difference in price of the bullets. In fact, the little more he spends on bullets will be saved in bbl life over his 300 RUM.

This, of course, depends on WHICH 338. If he is going to build a 338 Rum , Edge, or Lapua, I stand by my statement. If he is going to build based on a Chytec, well.....never mind!!

NOPE!!! Shawn Carlock just came up with some new EDGE brass imported from????? Supposed to be every bit as good as the Lapua brass we all love so much. It's expesive...$3.00 each, but is suppose to last for MANY, MANY firings. I got mine last week, but my reamer is not here yet.

I already had fifty Remington 300 RUM brass already prepped, so I am going go do my initial testing with that stuff. I like to take things up into the 'RED ZONE" during my testing...just so I know where the "END" is. Hard on brass. I would just as soon trash the cheap stuff!!

**** 3.00$ a piece is quite a bit! I wasnt talking about the edge either. i was talking about the .338 rum. would he have to resort to the remmy brass. i saw norma makes .300rum but not .338rum! maybe in the future!

I'm almost certain that Rem brass is all that is available maybe even Nosler. I'm not a big fan of either.. Lapua Brass is like $2.50-$2.75 a piece for the 338 Lapua Mag . Out of the Rum, Edge and Lapua the Rum would have the cheapest brass of them all giving it the uper hand on the cost spectrum.. He might be able to easily get to the 2600 fps range with a 26-28" barrel with the Rum. I like my Lapua with it's 32" barrel.. Once he gets past the initial cost of brass, bullets, dies, primers and powder the only thing left is keeping those 338's fed with powder, and they have a big appetite..

so would an edge be a better alternative. norma makes .300rum brass that could be used for way less than 3$ a piece! i know DE sells the dies but i literally know nothing about the edge and the pros and cons

If you factor in the ability to load a Lapua case 7-10 times you can load at around $1.60/round. That is using Berger bullets, 94 grs Retumbo, and GM215M primers.

In testing, Shawn took the imported Edge brass to TWENTY FIRINGS, and the primer pockets were still as new.

If you don't want to spend the bucks on the new brass, you can always just neck up remington 300 Rum brass to 338.

On the flip side, I bet it wouldn't be a problem to neck this new Edge brass down to .308 cal and have some KILLER 300 rum brass!!!

Anyone try this yet??
