Hello from Idaho

I "lurk" around this forum, and have been a member for awhile, just never posted. I very much appreciate all the valuable information I've read here.

My name is Bob, I'm a retired Wildlife Manager Supervisor who used to work for Arizona Game and Fish Dept. and before that for the Nevada Dept. of Wildlife. My wife works for the BLM, and she got a job up here in Salmon, Idaho so I retired and joined her.

Two kids, our son graduated last year from Southern Utah University (just got a job with BLM), and our daughter is still attending.

How did I get interested in Long Range Hunting? I'll blame my son who is a former Army Ranger, and who has a fanatical interest in not only tactical firearms, but also in Long Range hunting with "traditional" bolt action rifles.

He talked me into converting my old model 700, .30 - 06 (purchased in 1971), into a 6.5 x 284. I've been having way too much fun ever since, and believe I'll have this barrel worn out if I don't calm down! I've reloaded since High School, but I'm really getting carried away now!

Lots of opportunity for long range hunting in this area!

If ya ever get up that way I'd appreciate a burn report from Colson Creek drainage. Around Long Tom men/look out.

I haven't had the opportunity to get up that way since the fires.

There is/was a gene line of large antlered bucks in a small spot in that drainage. The pic haunts me fairly often.

I don't know if I would trust Randy with the "small spot" whereabouts. I'm a seasoned big buck secret spot keeper and am familiar with the eastern side. Why don't you PM me the location and I will check on the fire damage that way you won't have to worry about the "small spot" becoming public.

this is a tough spot to get to and to hunt LR. The shooting spot was >1400 yards to where we saw @ least a 196 4X4 way back when.

I'm figgerin' the gene pool remains.

In a full month of glassing from the same spot he was only spotted twice. Once for only a few moments. The second time it was for about 20 minutes, a couple of days after the season was over.

I ain't much of a secret keeper and there are only a few that will see this and much fewer that will put forth the effort to have a go at it.

Does this look about right to you Roy? You're right gotta want a good buck pretty bad. Its aways from Long Tom Mt. The gene pool will still be there if not a lot of pressure which this probably does not get.
