If you have experience using a 5c I'd like to know if the advertised advantages are for real? I'm planning a 300win mag build shooting VLD's.

I can't speak for all Broughton 5C's, but we have two 28" that are chambered in 300 win and they both show top velocity for the bullet weight used.

I sure can't say they will all be that way, but I would have no problem buying another one.

Your the one that got this brainstorm started!:D
Actually I had heard of some LR clients of ours that were speaking highly of them and you reminded me of that. Now I'm wondering if there's a pattern here. I read some old posts on the subject and found some who support what is advertised but those were from 2005 and older. Just wondering if there is any more feedback out there.
Thanks for the quick response Jeff!

I have seen several brand of barrels that seem to have a velocity advantage over other barrels
and they have been 3 and 5 grove barrels with hand lapped bores.

Grove count in theory should effect velocity and interior finish should also effect the velocity.

Factory barrels that are not hand lapped and have tool marks definitely slow down the bullet so
it is probably a combination of grove count and finish.

There are several premium barrels that perform better than others, so I would not believe
that "One" barrel is better than others or is faster than several other premium barrels.

Just my opinion

I've got 3 Broughton 5C barrels, .308, 300RUM and 7WSM. All of them shoot well, clean easily and shoot at anticipated velocities. Do they perform better than non-5C bench quality barrels; it's almost impossible to say but I am happy with all of them either way.

My experience in 6.5 barrels is that the Broughtons do not have a velocity advantage over the Brux cut rifled or the PacNor 3grooves. They all have been similar in velocity with the PacNor 3 groove having a slight ~15fps advantage over the others. That's my experience.

My first 300WSM used a Broughton 5c barrel and reason for the 5c (cant) Obermeyer owns the right to the 5r and stopped Tim North from using that.

I was one of the first to get one of his 5c barrels and the loading data back then was kind of iffy but before I had that rifle rebarrel new stock etc I'd shot it as factory and some reloads.

I had 1/12 twisted put on 25" long wanted to shoot the 165gr bullets and I also owned 30-338mag,300mag and 300wby all custom. I also have a 30-06 with Bartlein 1/11.25r barrel and another 300WSM with Krieger 1/11.25r barrel and 270Wby in the works with one of Mike Rock 5r barrel and Shilen 1/13 Ratchet twist 4groove barrel on another 30-06.

I've been pretty lucky in the gunsmiths and barrels I've had put on. 95% of my rifles I do better than published velocity and the Broughton was one of them and I got few Lilja 3 groove barrels that are pretty fast also.

I'm also not shooting the standard type twist/rifling and length normal found in factory so some gain velocity is due to that. I'm doing better with the Kreiger barrel 300WSM but it 2.5" longer than the Broughton and the Broughton did better than the factory barrel.

I only have one Broughton 5C and it is in my 338 RUM and it does seem to shoot a bit quicker than some others. My current load with berger 300 gr is 2830 verified with 90.0 gr. H-1000 It also shoots a 225 NAB @ 3300 with 97 gr H-1000 Finished barrel length is 27 3/8

That's impressive! I'm lookin at it like this, if I do gain a slight velocity advantage and find the bore easier to clean by going with a 5C great! If not I'll still have a great shooting barrel built by a company with a great reputation. I doubt I'm going to lose velocity.

My Broughton 5 C is also very easy to clean. I usually fill the bore with wipeout, let it sit, run a couple of patches, follow up with a couple of patches of hoppes number 9 and I am done.

I would say this is a fair assessment. I've been shooting Broughtons for a while now 8+ years and have noticed that only one of my 6.5 barrels took more copper than the rest. I cant say that they are any faster than any of the other barrels Ive used. I've had some great barrels from other manufacturers, but I can say my Broughtons consistently clean very easy. My current 6mm BR, 300wsm and 338 Norma run good speeds and take almost no copper. I am also extremely happy with the accuracy. Any maker can put out a bad barrel from time to time, I 've been fortunate with Broughton and have not got a bad one and between me and a few friends we have been through 20+
On re barrels Most shot the same load at the same or close FPS. I would not hesitate to buy another. I once asked Tim North what would happen if I get a bad barrel and he told me it would be replaced no questions asked and the smith would be compensated for his time. Good enough for me.
I had one friend tell me he felt he get a slow barrel from Broughton, kind of funny because that barrel went on to win the 1k world comp that year.
