Huskemaw vs. Leupold?

Ok, one more question!

I have convinced my wife that new glass is a necessary item this Christmas. I have narrowed it down to two choices. Its either going to be the Huskemaw 3-12 blue diamond or the Leupold VX-3 4.5 x 14 x 40mm with CDS. I have been a loyal Leupold guy since Ive been shooting rifles but I must admit the Huskemaw system is interesting. My goal is to shoot out to 600yds with consistancy and eventually get to 1000.

It will be mounted on a very accurate 7mm mag Sendero.

My price range wont allow for the larger scopes and these two seem to have what I'm looking for at a decent price. I'd like to get some opinions for/against these two systems.

I own both, but my Huskemaws are 5x20. I dont think you would go wrong with either scope but I personally prefer the Huskemaw. The glass is equal or a little better, the turret tracking is totally accurate, reliable, and true to measurement. The parallax adjustment on both my Huskemaw scopes are range calibrated in yardages that actually work. They pay a lot of attention to details like this. The two I have used for a few years, have had a lot of use and abuse with no issues. I'm not so confident of the VX 111 turret tracking, and they usually need to be factored if you are going for the longer ranges. My only advice, while your budget is limited, would be give careful though to a 5x20 since you plan on ultimately increasing your shooting range and you have an accurate rifle capable of long range work.

Thanks for the reply greyfox, I'm really torn about what to do here. I like everything about the huskemaw, just wonder how long they will be around. Leupold is proven and not going anywhere, but I do think the huskemaw system is probably more long range specific than the VX III.

I thnk the 12 or 14 power will be enough as down here in the south the mirage is horrible 9 months out of the year due to the humidity. 20x on a 98% humidity day is tough!

I personally think Huskemaw is here to stay. They have been increasing their distribution system, advertise quite heavily, and most of all have a great product and a very loyal and growing following. I think the risk of them going anywhere is extremely low. Certainly not enough to keep me from buying their product.

I have 3 or 4 Leopoldo's and 1 huskemaw. My vote is the huskemaw. I think the optics are better and the tracking is better. The huskemaw is a great tool.

In my own opinion, the Huskemaws do have very good glass.. they have an excellent reticle, it's simple & quick, not cluttered... parralax works very nicely, turrets attach threaded from above into gears, no lousey allen screws to get lost!!! VERY NICE in my-opinion (reminds me of Zeiss) ...and best of all, the tracking and repeatability is for sure reliable (not so regarding the Leupolds of 'my' past anyway*) I use mine for hunting and targets alike and am very very happy with it.. I have intentions to replace one of my other scopes with a second huskemaw following a re-barrel job on my latest rig... big 7mm I'm gearing-up for the 195's Berger is working on ~ but is a story for elsewhere

Long n short.. the Huskemaws will surprise you. Once you try one ya won't want whatever your old one was... they're just "that nice" to shoot through. And judging from the scabbard-time and abuse the horses and outfitters have put to those scopes (that so many carry cinched onto their saddles) I would imagine there isn't much any average shooter could do to wreck one..

Huskemaw it is! I gave them a call today to ask some questions and their customer service was outstanding. The gentleman I talked to went out of his way to answer my questions. There is no dealer in my area so I was a little nervous about spending so much for something I couldn't look over first. After talking with them today and the good comments from you guys think I'm going to pull the trigger. They also offer a 15% discount for law enforcement which brings the price down to within a few dollars of the leupold.
