.308 win 185gr berger

CB I also shoot the 185's in my 1:12 rem. with 40.5, imr 4064 and am getting well below .5" at 100. It is just slow! What kind of accuracy are you getting with >43gr.

Thanks

Anyone else shooting the 185gr bergers out of a 308 win.

Any one shooting them out to or past 1000yds?

If so i would like the hear your opinions and even some load data.

I shoot the 185 Berger Hybrids and 185 Juggernauts out of my custom FTR rifle. The matches I shoot are 600 yards but I have also shot it out to 1000 yards and it does very well. I'm running a 28 inch Krieger barrel (11 twist). I'm using Alliant Power Pro 2000MR powder, CCI BR2 primers, Lapua Brass and my rifle has a match chamber. My load is 47.6 gr (same charge for both bullets) loaded 2.210 from base to ogive for the hybrid and 2.230 base to ogive for the Juggernaut. This load is safe in my rifle, primers and brass look good but if you try it work up to it as it might be hot in yours. Both bullets give me right at 2800 ftps. with ES of 9 when chronographed in the summer. I'm also in the process of working up a load for the 200gr hybrids and so far its impressive but only shot at 100 yards so far. 46.2 gr is giving me 2660 ftps. (70 degree temp) and is shooting 5 shot groups in one ragged hole with ES of 8. Never shot the 185 VLD in this rifle but im sure the powder charge wouldn't be far off of the hybrid/juggernaut charge.

I just started playing with some Berger 185 gr. Target bullets in my 308. I have a custom 22" barrel in 12" twist and match chamber set up for the 168 gr. match bullets.

I've found H-414 to be good, at least in the summer when it was 82 F, with the 185's. I was getting 2511 fps average for 6 shots with a SD of 8. At 100 yards, I obtained a 0.551" 5-shot group. I haven't tried this load in colder weather yet or at long distances. I use Fed 210M primers and Lapua brass.

208 amax's and the 308 is a sweet combo. 2600 is very possible in 24+" bbls. The 12 twist while not optimum works just fine. Accuracy is good as well. 168 class bullets are great but the 208 can dang near double the effective hunting range of any 168 or 175 class bullet.

N540, N550 or RL17 will get you what you want with the heavies.

does anyone on here think that with the right powder that 2650 or at least 2600 is attainable with winchester brass 20" 10 twist bbl and loaded to mag length? with the juggernaut that is.

Trying to decide on a hunting bullet for my new 308 win, im doing my first load development with 175 Nosler CCs just getting to learn the gun but am leaning towards the 168 or 208 amax before 185 berger just for the sake of their price, to achieve decent velocity will the 208 amax's have to be seated beyond the ~2.800 standard mag length and loaded singally?

Bushman, I used to shoot a 700 milspec with the berger 168 vlds in comps to 1000 yards. Needed 35 moa for the steel Target.
Load data was
Lapua brass
Fed match primer
44 gr of Varget
Coal was 2.860" no I couldn't use my box mag anymore :(
Didn't have too good of luck with a 24" barrel. (Missed a lot...). Bullet was subsonic around 850

Just this year I upgraded to a GAP thunder Ranch. Started with the 185 hybrid hunting bullets after reading Brian's book. I was worried with the 22" barrel I would be screwed at the 1000 yard mark. Finally chronoed my load at 2615 fps. I need 36 moa for 1000 yards. Bullet doesn't go subsonic until after 1000 yards. Feels like cheating compared to my factory 700.

Load for the TR
Lapua brass
44 gr Varget.
Coal 2.845 works good out of the ai mag
Fed match primer.

I honestly feel unless you have a custom gun, its hard to take advantage of the larger 308 bullets in the 308 win. You either lose the mag capability or case capacity for powder. The 185 hybrid was fool proof in picking a seating depth. I would try the 168 hybrid hunting bullet in a factory rig.

The rem700 with a Wyatts extended box mag or a savage will accept a 2.995" oal and feed from the mag. The problem with 185-210grn pills is that a Saami spec 308win chamber needs about .060-.075" more throat to keep the bullets out of the powder space. The 185 hybrid can hit 2600fps from a 20" barrel with CFE223 and good match primers but case life will suffer. 2800fps is easy with a 26" barrel and RE17, RE15, AR comp, 2000MR, CFE223, W760 with mag primers, etc... With the proper throat length the 208 amax or 210 berger can be pushed to 2700fps with a heavy charge of RE17 and Fed210Ms in a 26" barrel but the 308 was never really intended to shoot lead over 175grns, but anything is worth a try.

Ive been shooting the 185 berger at 2550fps for about a year and really like it. After playing with cfe and hearing so many good things about re17 ive been considering a switch. If i could acheive 2600 with a 185 or 190 berger and get 10+ loads out of a case that would be ideal.

Canadian bushman, how long is your barrel? With a 24" or longer RE17 under a 190 berger should get you 2600+ fps if jammed in the lands to allow it to fully pressure up with RE17. I do this with my 6br, using RE17 and 105 berger hybrids I get 3060fps with a 29" barrel from the little ole br case, but if I don't jam em in the lands I lose 250fps.
