Another kill with the 338 Lapua!

This time a mature North dakota mule deer doe. 330 yards in full value 11 mph wind with the 280 grain LRX, she was facing us slightly, the bullet entered just infront of the onside shoulder and exited right behind the offside shoulder. She jumped up at the shot and stumbled around for about 20 seconds, traveling about 30 yards, and did a death jump into a thick pile of tumbleweeds . She left a blood trail a blind man could follow. The bullet left about a 1 1/4" exit and a .338 diameter entrance. It took out the front of the offside lung and tore up the top of the heart. EDIT: forgot to add that we shot at a coyote at 554 yards, he was sitting down and facing us and i was a little off on my wind call and the bullet went just to the left of his face, to bad because he had a really nice coat on him.

That would be the MRX or maximum range x bullet, that they discontinued. heres a link to the lrx page on their website. Long Range Premium Hunting Bullet | Barnes Bullets
Ive done some testing in wet newspaper and found they expand down to 1500 fps.

My 338 111LRH will be in the storm case along with the 308 11 Lightweight, leaving wednesday (in the car) for Corona, NM. With me of course.

The 338 will probably stay in th case but may come our depending on circumstances.

We have a 24,000 acre ranch to ourslves, from Saturday to Saturday.

Just hope I can deal with Mexican cusine..... extra TP will be packed.....

Thanks barnesuser, I have been reloading the tsx for years and recently the ttsx with similar results as you show in your pictures. Everything from elk to deer have been DRT. Accuracy has been good too. Since we have lead free zones where I live, I decided to just find a lead free load for all my large game no matter where I hunt. I'll have to give the LRX a try.

Good luck! The LRX shoot 3 rounds you can cover with a dime at 100 yards.

Mule Deer Riley. Hopefully big males.

Just like a 250. The weight of the firearm negates the felt recoil and it's not a sharp wack, rather a push. The brake goes a long way toward lessening visits to the chiropractor.

I'd rather leave it in the case and use the 308, preference be known. The 338 is an expensive rifle to use and I suspect with some careful stalking, the 308 will handle any issue that arises.

It is a fun gun to shoot, just not a budget rifle. I certainly don't regret ever buying one.

Well good luck to ya! But remeber "Anything less than overkill is under achievment" . We could of easily made that shot with the 25-06 we had with but thats no fun.

Riley... I have to disagree. It's more fun to take the shot with a smaller caliber because it takes more concentration and skill. The 338 at that range is a laser beam shot. Th 25-06 is more of a shot.....

Really don't matter anyway. It all winds up in the freezer, as jerky or Sunday dinner with carrots, potatoes and gravy.

I just don't want to see this winter be a repeat of last winter. We need some serious snowpack and a substantial period of cold temperatures. My farming can't take another arid year.

barnesuser28, I use the 300 SMK in my 338LM and the Barnes 225 TTSX in my 338RUM. I just ordered the 280 Barnes LRX to experiment with. If I may ask, what load did you use in your Lapua?

Sidecarflip, currently, the weather is very cold down here in NM, many areas received rain/snow. Corona NM has always been a great place for mule deer, especially on private ranches. It can be fairly open down there, so you may have some long shots. It was a very dry year, but Corona usually has a large population of deer.

PS, bring your Tums and Pepto and you'll be fine.
