Just signed up to take part in these great duscussions. I have grown up in the west, hunting deer, elk and antelope for over 40 years. I'm relatively new to long range shooting. Favorite cartidges are 8mm Rem. Mag, 7mm STW and 6.5 Rem Mag. Look forward to visiting with you. Last week a friend borrowed my STW and, with a little coaching, shot a nice cow elk @ 475yds. This was our first elk using the 168 Berger bullet. I got very little expansion on a double lung hit, but adequate(?) as the elk died within seconds after traveling about 60dys.

Too Tall,
I'm in Harlowton, MT. I used to live on the "west side". I've hunted a lot near Trout Creek. What have game numbers done in your area since the woofs have showed up?

Not good..... My Bro-in-law hunted near there first week.... 4 guys saw one cow in 4 days hunting. Wolves have not affected herds around here (Central MT).....yet.

Greetings from the Great Falls side of the Big Sky Country!

Not much luck for me either. Hunting mostly the Little Belts for elk but without success thus far. Most harvests I've heard were either outfitted or on private properties :(.

Welcome to LRH and enjoy.

Hello Ed,
Thanks for the note. I've been in hunting camp for a couple days...had to come into town to vote. One partenr got a cow borrowing my STW last week. 168 Berger @ 475. Double lung hit...elk walked 30yds and fell. Another partner got a cow in the Crazies this morning....250yds w/7mag shooting factory 175s. We had another cow walk out onto a nice open ridge @ 250dys, but my nephew was a little slow on the draw and she got away with no shots fired. Soooo..... we've been seeing a few. Hope your luck improves with this weather coming in Friday.....

Glad to know you guys are having luck! Last Saturday, I was at the King's Hill area of the Little Belts elk hunting and heard 28 shots fired before 1030 but not really sure it if they are towards elk ... most sounded like semi-autos :(:(:(.

Will give it another try this weekend. Good luck to you too!

Ed
