have a buddy looking for a rifle at the moment. hes stuck between 308 and 300win mag. gun will be used for mainly whitetail deer and probably coyotes.im pushing him towards the 308. looking for a rifle now. i used to like rem 700s but seein the way thier qc has gone to **** the past couple years i dont really care to try something that may or may not have problems. i didnt own any of the rifles that did have problems but i had some friends with 6 or 8 rifles with chamber problems. i hear nothing but good things about the new savages mostly hear about the 10s but what do yall know or the 14s? the american classic?

I got my daughter a savage 14, and it's well a savage, once you get past the looks, it does what savages do and that's just plain shoot. Though the barrel on hers required fire lapping since the bore looked like a file. Now she working on shooting out the barrel so she can get a better one

Nothing wrong with the 14. So why not compromise and go with the 300WSM? Gives you the best of both worlds... better barrel life than the 300WM, and more horse power than the .308. The 30-06 would be a good option also.

The Rem 7mag is the best comprimise between the two. No more recoil than the 308, maybe less, and flatter shooting than the 308. Alot less recoil than the 300 and will do the same job just as well, IMO.

The Tikka is very nice rifle as well as the savage. At what range does your buddy want to hunt the deer? Inside 800 I see no need to kill your shoulder and your wallet.

well hes not a very good shot hes only hunted with a 30-30 as far as i know. i reload my 308s and really around here theres nothin u cant kill with a 308. he wont have any distance shots to amount to anything. most likely nothin over 150 yards. ive been wantin to start doin some distance shooting myself and hes wantin to do that with me so i been tryin to push a 10 on him. 308 mainly bc i reload them but also factory ammo is cheap and u can find it in any store. i had a 300rum for a couple years and plain out loved it. shot good recoil didnt bother me at all but the ammo was just too high when u could find it and even to reload them i couldnt get but 70 out of a pound of powder. just too expensive and really no need for it i this area. for him to go from a 3030 to a 3006 or 300 or 7mm it would be way too expensive for him to try to learn to shoot at any distance. and for the wsm caliber lets just say im not a fan at all. nearly every one of them i have seen have cracked case necks almost every shot and the wsm is nothin u cant do with hand loading in the reg mag version. the only advantage to the wsm to me is the short action and thats not anything i care about. not tryin to step on any toes i personaly just have no use for them

Get him a savage 10 pc or a tikka t3. You said most shots are 150 and in, no sense in any extra recoil. I have a 20" barrel on my 308 and it's perfect for tree stands and stalking. A Remington model 7 7mm-08 would be good too.

Id still steer him toward a 700CDL in 308. Some of Remingtons cheaper models, which I have purchased and then had to send to a smith immediately...appear to have NO QC at all done...but the BDL and the CDL models seems "more like" the older M700's.

IMO, it's pretty hard to go wrong with a savage. Fairly cheap, for the most part, they shoot better than me. Upgrades are easy and and they're pretty easy to work with.

thanks for the replies yall. i got a question for myself also. what do yall think about the savage long range hunters in a 338 lapua? as far as a play toy and distance shooter goes.

Shuamee I don't know how much your friend wants to spend I have a Tika t3 grey laminated stock stainless barrel with a 4x16 x 44 or 50 can't remember off hand at a friend of mines shop right now for sale it is posted on Line in a couple of sites. I think price is fair($900.00) has a bout 200 rounds if that down tube. Only reason I'm selling want to build another rifle using money from sale to buy an action. PM me if interested. By the way this thing shoots pretty well.

I'd get the hs precision model for the 338.

The Lapua's in the Savage are getting pretty good reviews. If I were me, like the post above me, I would want to go with the HS model. I've handled the BA and it is a little heavy and bulky.

can the savages shoot as well as the rem 700 cdl? I always hear people say that out of all their guns the 700's out shoot any of their collection. i am only asking because i am looking at savage 111 left hand and rem 700 left hand (sps or cdl)
