175gr Berger vld's in 300 win

Is anyone else using the 175 vld's in the 300 win mag?

I'm working up a load for a friend's Remington 700 for medium to longrange use...
I know quite a few of you will probably recommend going with something heavier, maybe more in the 200 to 210gr range but he supplied the bullets and that is where I'm starting....

I've tried some reloader22, still working a load up but so far none the loads I have tried are jumping out at me.... (Maybe my savages have spoiled me ... Seemed with them I could just throw a load together and after couple tweaks and they'd print cloverleafs....)

Anyone else have any luck with rl22 and 175's,
any other powder recommendations? Retumbo or rl25 or would they be too slow burning?

Better yet, has anyone else done an ocw work up on the 175's... I only ask because I've found that in my other calibers my accuracy loads recipes (that i developed long before i even heard of the concept) have matched up with ocw loads that others have worked up..... Plus I'm lazy and am looking for a short cut since my initial attempt at ocw workup leaves me thinking I screwed up

I have years of shooting long range loads in the 300 win. But none with the lighter bullets. I know he supplied the little 175's but if you get to the point of trying another bullet try some H-1000 and a 210 VLD. Work up should be a short one starting at 73 gr and working toward 77. The 210's kill very well and their long range potential is awesome. Expect a MV from a 26" tube to be right about 2850.

Good luck with the 175's but I sure would not recommend that bullet, especially if elk are ever on the menu.

Not planning for elk as far as I know.... Mostly whitetail, coyotes and longrange targets.... I was crunching some #'s and the 175's at 3000fps buck the wind better than the 210's at 2850.... That seem right to you guys?

Anyways I have a load that is showing some promise and I'm thinking that for what he wants to do with it the 175's will be a little nicer on the shoulder than the 210 gr bullets...

If they don't pan out I have some hornady 208gr hpbts laying around to try but I don't know if they'd be that good for killing things without causing a mess...

I use the 175s in my 30-06 at around 2700fps and i would not want to be pushing them faster. Quick kills on deer but ive had a couple not pass through after hitting bone and i can only immaging more speed will make that an issue.

Im shooting sub MOA with RL22 in a 300 WSM with 175's. Shoots quite well actually. 66gr, im two thousandths off the lands with a WLRM primer at 2990 fps. Shot .5 MOA last weekend at 500.

73.5 of R22 gives me 2980 from a 26" Hart. Longest shot/kill to date- 6x6 Elk @ 740 yards. He took exactly 7 steps before going down.

Reloader 22 should work well. Starting load is 73.0 gr MAX is 76.8 gr. Approx velocities are 2938 to 3091 fps and its a 98% fill ratio. Have you done any experiments with cartridge OAL ?
