Amax vs accubond

Last summer I shot some 162gr Amax with H1000 out of my 280AI and they shot great, but with them being a target bullet I thought I might give 160gr accubonds a try with H4831SC and was very disappointed with their performance. I have some 168gr bergers to try, but am a little Leary because I have not had much luck with them in the past. How do the Amax bullets perform on game??

The 162 a-max work great on deer. I would be wary of using them inside 200yds, thats where the 160 accubond would work well. I have personally shot deer out to 650yds with the a-max from my 7mm mag, they worked very well, all one shot kills.
We don't have elk down here in NZ so I can't give advice on them.

I shot two antelope with the 162 A-max in 7WSM. One at 234 yrds, head on which, is pictured and one at 284, from the side, right behind the left leg. The head on shot hit the brest bone and just blew the area apart. The second antelope was hit on the ribs and the A-max entered and jelled everything, both were one shot kills. I only have the one picture of the first hunt, as I was alone on the second hunt.

I have had excellent results using the 162gr A-Max bullet on whitetails. I've killed many of them with broadside lung shots and others with high shoulder shots. Shoulder shots do not exit and deer drop to the shot. I have never experienced a massive entry wound as seen on the antelope above. Either shot results in a quickly dispatched animal.

If you change bullets,especally from one type to another you need to start over in the load
develoupment.

look at the performance on game with hunting bullets and the accuracy on target bullets.

Sometimes you can get both accuracy and terminal performance from a hunting bullet but
rarely does a target bullet give good performance (Wound channel) on game.

Most target bullets are excessive and destroy to much tissue. (Like varmint Hunter I have
never seen that much damage even with a target bullet but it doesen't surprise me.

So my recommendation would be to pick the hunting bullet of your choice and work up the
most accurate load for it.

I personally have found the Accubond very accurate and dependable on game under all
conditions and with varied hits.

I played with some more accubonds and added some bergers and the bergers shoot great out of my gun, but did have to dope the wind alot this morning. I might just finally have a gun that will shoot bergers.

I have come to the conclusion that the "premium" bullets for hunting are a total waste of money. Also boat tail bullets are also not needed. Flat based bullets are almost always more accurate at hunting distances (25-500 yards). Either pick yourself up some Speer hot cores , Hornady flat based interlocks, or sierra pro hunters and go hunt whatever you want.
Those accubonds may be cool and all, but not needed and way overpriced. If you want a good bonded bullet then get the Speer deepcurl.
The Amax on the other hand is a fantastic long range hunting bullet. Same with the SST.

The way I choose, is harder flat based bullets for short to mid range and softer boat tail bullets for extreme long range (amax,sst and the overlooked Speer spbt)

The Swift Scirocco is an excellent all around hunting bullet provided they will group in your rifle. Good b.c., expand at longer ranges, and hold up at close range. The often overlooked Nosler Ballistic tip is also a pretty good all around bullet although it doesn't hold up as well at high velocity as the scirocco. It is lower priced though and usually gives excellent accuracy......Rich

I've taken an antelope doe and muley doe with 178 gr A-max off my .300 Win Mag ~300 yards. On both, had very little entry/exit hole but the internal were blown and DRT.
