Need help in Houston !

I found this site last year , and have wanted to get into long range shooting ! Most shots I have taken before finding this site was 150 yards . So last year I purchase a 300 ultra SPS , and shot that gun for awhile and found that with a standard conture barrel gets hot. Pretty quick , and started to throw bullets around . I then purchased a Lar 8 with a 24 " barrel , 308, . Started shooting the 308 for range time a practicing my shooting technic , trigger pull and hold breathing , site picture . Well in just over a year I can hold MOA out to 300 yards and have made 334'yard kill shot on pigs this last year , I also have shot the 308 to 600 yards and can hit a 12x12 plate .

Well that gets me to this point , I started loading in February of this year , started with the 308 , I have got the reloading down for the auto I can shoot with my hand loads and hold consistently 3Moa to 300 yards . I will go out farther this month,

Now for the problem I purchased a newer 300 ultra mag sendaro , 26" tube with a brake , this is a stock gun with trigger work done it has a karsten cheek riser on it also .so I started loading berger 210 vld for this gun got it down to 3/4 MOA at 100 , I have not tried out 200-400 yet .

I wanted to load some Barnes 180 triple shock for it well I started shooting some factory loads thru the gun held under .50 MOA did not chrono this load ,
So I loaded using 180s and retumbo started with 87 grains working up in .5 grains so 87.5,88 ,88.5 ,90,90.5,91,91.5 92, 92.5 ,


Velocity ont he last load 92.5 grains was 3140 3 shots only had a 12 fps difference . Best I could get was right at an inch MOA ,93 grains is max on Barnes website

Before any one asked , the gun was clean , gun is bedded , action screws are tight , scope has been verified tracking

I have tried full length sizing and neck sizing only . Seating depth is measured from oligive

I am at a loss , is there anyone in the Houston area the would,be willing to verify my loading , watch me load or me watch them load to figure this out , I know the gun is able to shoot sub MOA .


I just don't want to load any more. and put rounds down the barrel of this gun . Until I can figure out what I am doing wrong . Please pm if anyone is in the Houston Texas area , thanks Steve

Well the best advice one could give you is to do your very best to replicate the factory loads which are shooting so well for you.

My Sendero Rum, very similar to yours shoots the remington and federal factory ammo so well I really see no sense in reloading for it at this point since I'm not out there just burning up rounds "shooting".

The attached target is from Remington Factory with 180gr Sciroccos, and the bobcat was killed with the same rifle at 1080yds a few weeks later.

You can drive yourself completely nuts trying to get better than 1 MOA groups. Without looking at, weighting all of your brass, checking dimensions, seeing how you are measuring powder etc it's going to be difficult to guide you to doing much better than you are. A lot of it can simply come down to shooting technique/position from one outing to the next, parallax adjustment on the scope etc.

As long as I can hit a smaller than MOA target consistently with my first cold bore shot every time I don't chase it a whole lot farther than that.

Another factor which could be seriously affecting your groups can be something as simple as changes in wind from shot to shot and length of time between each shot.

as far as reloading. it would impossible to tell the OP what to do on here. there are so many variables in reloading. different powders, charge weights, primers, bullets, brass, weighing/sorting brass and bullets, seating depth, neck tension, etc, etc, etc... that's the toughest part of this game.

i agree with the above advice, and just try to copy the factory load that shoots well if you are happy with that rounds performance. measure it's length, use the same bullet, chrono it, and load up till you hit that speed

Thanks. It wasn't that big of a deal actually since he was practically sitting on my 1080yds target that I shoot frequently just to make sure my LR rifles are still "on".

When you know the distance, can read the wind, and already know your scope dope it's a chip shot compared to a lot of our real "long range hunting" shots.

I'm not a competition shooter so I don't chase the ultimate in teenie, tiny groups any more and I really don't have the budget to do that much shooting these days.

As a hunter what really matters is being able to place 3 shots, including the cold bore shot within 1/2 MOA of center preferably within one minute (60 seconds) or less.

In most practical hunting situations that's all you are going to get, and you've got to make them count or you go home hungry and frustrated.

I just was got into reloading for better acurracy , i have bought factory ammo that shot very well only to have then next box be far from POI that the first box had ,

like i said i just want to know if there was any one in the area that would be willing to take a look at what i am doing to see if i am missing somthing in my reloading process . I think that it is something small but not sure , I will try some more loads this weekend to see if i get the same result as last weekend .

And maybe what was said if i get a accurate load from factory loads why reload . ?

I would start by matching the overall length of the loaded factory rounds. I have found that generally speaking most of the TTSX bullets I have loaded like to be seated deeper. I shoot the 180, 165 gr TTSX in various .30 calibers and 120& 140 gr TTSX in two 7mm's aNd find them extremely accurate. Retumbo is a good powder for the ultra.....make sure and use magnum primers ( I use Fed 215M) and try seating them .500 off the lands for starters.

.5 off the lands! wow i thought i was seating them deep at .1 off the lands in a savage 110 fcp 338 Lapua. i would start at least .1 off and work back from there.

Shoot it at 200+ yds. You might be surprised and shoot tighter groups (MOA wise) than you do at 100.
You have a good consistent velocity, the bullet may just need a little bit more time to stabilize.

.500 seems like a lot and it is but it's worth trying before giving up. I was having trouble getting my 284 to group with the Barnes and was given this advice, it worked for my rifle.

well birddog im in houston area also...remember this heat down here really affects our rifles. today it was 96 with a heat index of 99..so when at the range we really have to take our time shooting or the barrel really heats up quickly..holler at me and we can get in some range time..Gary
