308 with break

Ok so I'm thinking of putting a muzzle break on a 308 for my girl fried for elk but concerned it might still be to big she shoots a 243 now and was wondering how they might compare

Before my wife went to shoot her red deer, I took her out a few times shooting feral goats,with the 708 she was going to use on deer, however I loaded a mild load with 120 gr NBT, It had enough to flatten a goat at 300 yrds but mild enough that it didnt frighten her nor beat the crap out of her either, shes only little too.

When it came to the deer hunt, she carried rifle I carried magazine and ammo, rather stout load pushing a 140gr NBT, because of the added adreline and focus of the "HUNT" she paid no attention to what ammo she had, or the added recoil etc.
Concentrated on getting the job done, and she did! first deer at 240 yrds, not along way but I know plenty of men that have cocked up shots half the distance.

So what Im getting at, do a mild load with say a 120 gr V max or similar for pratice and getting used to the feel of the rifle ,then move her into the full blown hunting load.

Just another option for you to consider.

Both my .300 Win Mags have effective muzzle brakes and felt recoil is similar to .243's.

Right on guys ya she is rather small about 120lbs so ya I think a light load is a good idea but at the same time I think the break is a good idea I have one on my 30-378 witch is my elk gun and it has less kick than my 270

If the 30-378 recoils abit less than a 270, give her a pair of ear plugs and muffs and let her use that, the noise will problem more than the recoil, over come that, should be job done.

Oh one more thing I should mention, once they kill an animal with YOUR rifle it then becomes THEIR RIFLE!
The 708 is now know as "precious" yes, like "lord of the rings" its kinda disturbing

I have a brake on my 308 SPS Tactical and it kicks like a 223, it's great. I shoot it all the time with 168's. Once you do that you will never be able to get it away from her.

Give your GF a break and put a brake on. With proper equipment and training, the shooting/hunting experience can be pleasant. It's old but check out this 9 year old girl with his brute of a brown bear. She used a Remington 700 Stainless chambered in .375 H&H with a muzzle brake and topped with a Zeiss Diavari Classic 1.5 - 4.5 x 18 scope pushing 270 grain Barnes Triple-shock. As added protection she was also using a shoulder pad.

a while back i picked up a stainless model 7 308 pretty cheap because someone installed a muzzle brake on it. I shot it before and after and it did make a big differnce in recoil. Id say with the brake it was very simular to a 243 if not even a bit lighter. I wacked it off anyway because it was just to ugly and loud. But for a rifle for a kid or women it probably would have stayed.
