Loads for 6mm Rem with short barrel?

Working up some loads for a 6mm Rem carbine with a 17 3/4 inch barrel. Should I use a faster burning powder than normal because of the short barrel? Suggestions for bullets, favorite loads?

I have a model 600 Remington in 6mm Remington. I have found the best use of the short barrel involves using a bigger bullet.
Try IMR 4350 and a 100 Grain Gameking. At my altitude it shoots less than one inch @ 100 yards going 3000 fps. It is a decent little deer rifle.

My friend has an 18 1/2" barrel 6mm and likes the Hornady 87 gr BTHP for varmint and target. Even small deer where you can get a clean broadside into their lungs. He can hold 3/4" groups at a hundred. He uses Accurate 4350. I'll try to get the exact load for you. I use the same bullet with 43 gr of Accurate Magnum Rifle powder(discontinued but pretty much the same as 3100). I can get under a .25" group out of my Rem 788 .243 with 18 1/2" barrel. You can cover them with a nickel.

I load my Remington Model 600 with the 18 1/2" barrel in 6mm Remington with IMR4350 and 100gr. Nosler partitions. It shoots great with 43.0 grs. at right around 2800 fps.

No. There is no reason to go to a faster powder!

General rule of thumb is that whatever powder produces top velocities in a standard length barrel will also produce top velocities in a shorter barrel.
It's pressure/time curve that derives velocity, not necessarily the speed of the powder, per se.
If you go to a faster powder, the pressure/time curve is reduced, and therefore velocity will suffer, even in a shorter barrel.
If we were talking about a 12" barrel, then a faster powder would be beneficial.

Stick with the top loads in your manuals, generally the top 3 powders listed with the highest velocities will be the best choice.
