Winchester Model 70 ????

I have been planning a build for a WSM and have been looking at custom actions and dreaming but would likely build it on a Remington action. Today I seen some of the Push feed model 70 in WSM bolt fact for low prices.

Is there any reason not to use this action? With good components and smith is there an accuracy dissadvantage or safety issue (case head failure) I don't need the extractor as it's a range gun not a dangerous game rifle.

Just curious as I have never owned or shot a winchester.

Jeeze I hope not! I just ordered a new Hart bbl and McMillan Edge stock to build a 7WSM on my Winchester Controlled Round Push Feed Model 70. I really like the Winchesters and have seen many of them outperform many Remingtons. Their 3 position safeties are great. My biggest complaint with them is that their magazine boxes are often wayyyyy to short. My Winchester Coyote 7WSM magazine box was the exception and not the rule, I could seat 168 Bergers to jam length and still fit them in the magazine so I decided to use it for another 7WSM.

No reason whatsoever. Great action with no safety issues. The three position safety is alot better than most. I have a factory, short action, Heavy Barrel Varmint model in .243 Win, blued action with 26" stainless barrel and HS Precision stock, and this thing shoots!
I also own a Remington and Savage's with heavy, varmint profile barrels in various calibers and this Winchester holds it's own. I know it shoots as accurately out to 600yds as my 7mmRemMag and .300WinMag, just doesn't hit with the authority they do. JohnnyK.

Ive got a pile of Winchesters. I love em. I wanted to build on one with a claw extractor also, but I just couldnt bring mysef to...........At least not when I have a Model-70 Win, chambered in 300wby with a controled round feed to build on.
It will be my first build also, I just need the $ to get serious about it with a smith.
Right now Im a ''mid range shooter'' with both the 300wby and a 270wsm.(600+ I practice and play to 850 now) and hand load for both. Still 600 seems to be my max consistantly effective range. I gotta get better at reading wind.
The only things Ive ever hered of to wach for with the C.R.F.was when loaded too hot and a case gets stuck, the claw grabbs better(more surface area?)
And Ive hered of 1 C.R.F. claw in the front of the bolt that broke off (factory defect?) its never happened to any of mine.
GOOD LUCK, and i wanna see pictures!

I hope there isn't any issues! My model 70 is at the smith right now...It was a 7WSM I bought used at a super cheap price and is at Jim See's shop now getting a complete overhaul...it's going to stay a 7WSM, but the 26" brux barrel will be throated for the 168gr VLD's, add a new HS stock with built in adj cheek peice...add a paint job, and sit around and dream of it until Sept when I finally get it back

Are there any issues with truing the M70 action or can it be trued like the rem 700 actions. I was looking at building an ultralight mountain rifle. The only thing stock will be the action but i just want to know if the winchester will be as good as the rem 700 after it visits the smith????

I'm not a gunsmith so I can only state that I BELIEVE that a Winchester action can be trued as well or nearly as well as a Remington. I had my Win. Model 70 7WSM trued and rebarrelled and it's a sub 1/2MOA rifle, it might be a 1/4 MOA rifle but my 10x scope and abilities might be limiting.

I do belive that the Winchester actions wiegh more than the Remingtons. Something to consider for an ultralight build.
