savage 12 LRP

I am curious as to whether or not anyone has any experience with one of these rifles yet. I am looking to start building a collection back up and thought this would be a nice rifle to start with.

I have one in 6.5 Creedmoor and it is outstanding for what I want it for (f-class and long range tactical matches). Great trigger, very smooth loading and ejection. Exceptionally accurate.

I have a Model 12 LRPV in .223 which I shoot in long range competition. It is very accurate.

Most Savage rifles are good shooters - but not all of them. My previous was a Model 12LR which did not shoot worth a hoot.

Thank you both for your shared wisdom , I've owned Remington 700s in the past and it might sound stupid of me but are the savages more front heavy than the 700 FYI my dad works for Remington so this would be my first time commuting treason

I would say that if you used the same stock and same barrel that the Remington would actually seem more front heavy than the Savage. The Savage receiver is heavier.

Really good stuff , at the risk of sounding like a moron does anyone know were i could just buy a savage action i know they offer the target actions but i am not sure if i want something in stainless or with that light of a trigger id like to get a 10 fp action or matte 12 target/ varmint action. any suggestions or websights .

I have a Savage LRP in 260 on order. I have a few Savages and they all shoot exceptionally well. My ordering of the LRP was based upon seeing one shoot at my club. It was in 243 that was shooting consistent sub 1" groups at 200 yards with factory ammo. I really liked everything about it. HS stock, barrel weight, Accutrigger, repeater, and a decent price. Can't wait to get it.

I have the same rifle but have not shot it yet and was wondering what load you use?

Well, funny you should ask. I also posted this over on the 6.5 Creedmoor forum this afternoon.

Went out today to run an OCW (Optimal Charge Weight) test on my LRP in 6.5 Creedmoor. Other than shooting one of my #3 loads at my #2 target all went well. Using factory Hornady brass (once fired) and 139gr Lapua bullets, and my charge weights ranged from 40.0gr to 42.0gr of H4350 in 0.4gr increments (1% steps). I am showing no pressure signs at 42.0gr so I am debating on whether or not to explore around that weight. I plan on using this gun for 300, 600 and 1000 yard competition so the extra ummph might come in handy if it is also accurate.

There SEEMS to be a node at around 40.8gr to 41.2gr. It is possible that another node is there at around 42.0gr and I may load some up from 41.8gr to 42.4gr in 0.2gr increments and see what it looks like. I'm going to do the same for the other node as well. Couldn't get my chronograph working today. I think the sun was futzing with it. 41.5gr clocks in at 2807fps with this gun.

I have in the past owned 308 win. and 223 rem. rifles trental the 6.5 was what I was wanting it would be my first 6.5 how would you rate it vs. the 308? Recoil, and such.

Generally the 6.5 cartridges have a fair amount less recoil than the .308win. I have experience with the 6.5x47 Lapua, 6.5 Creedmoor and the .260. Those three are all very similar in recoil to each other. Generally the .308 with heavier bullets has a bit more recoil.

The 6.5 cartridges are a pleasure to shoot.

Thought I would update this thread with my final OCW test for this rifle.

Well, I think I have a 1/4 MOA gun, and I am a 1/2 MOA shooter.

Is that anything like being a 1/4 bubble off?

I am settling on 41.0gr of H4350 for this gun with the Lapua 139gr bullet. All these groups are 1/2" or less and group 3 is 0.195 MOA (.204"). I'm not going to futz with bullet seating depth as I am pretty happy with my results. The only thing left for this LRP is a cheekrest so that I can get a better cheek weld (60mm scope!). Then I need to find some f-class or long range competitions in my area and go see what this combo can do at 600yds and 1000yds. Velocity is an even 2800fps with this load.
