Which custom action???

I have 4 predator actions. I like them because they work and I paid 715 for 2 of them and 850 for the other 2.

I have 2 Tac300s and 2 predators.

I really like BAT because there is not a finer action made. Borden second.

I did not go with those actions due to 1 year wait time. Stiller had actions ready to ship, no wait.

Jason,

I think you will find that custom actions are alot like custom barrels. The top manufacturers all produce a great product you will be happy with. This will boil down to which features are important to you.

1: Do you want a repeater?

2: Do you want an integral recoil lug?

3: Do you want an integral scope rail?

4: If not, do you want 8-32 base screws?

5: Fluted bolt?

6: Interchangable bolt knobs?

I am looking hard at the Aztek Arms action. The recoil lug is integral with the action. For a guy who likes to switch barrels around, this is a good feature. Also, it comes in a version that is a bit longer than a typical short action. I can keep a fairly short action and run 208's out of my 308 with more powder and the 6.5x284 with heavy VLD's to their full potential without having to go to a long action.

I will be in Phoenix on Friday. I will head up to Payson sometime in the afternoon. Saturday I might run up near Snowflake to shoot some prarie dogs or just shoot some long range. Who knows, maybe we can meet up and shoot. I was going to bring my bow for a few days of deer hunting but I dont have the time to get my bow dialed in and $$$ is somewhat tight and archery deer tags aren't cheap! I have a work conference on the 31st at the Ritz Hotel. I might even bring my 300RUM and get around to that double chrony test with the 178s I promised to do.

Michael I'll be in 23 archery deer hunting Friday-Tuesday but could brake away for some shooting. It would be nice to finally meet. If you still have my # just give me a call, if not let me know and I'll get it to ya.

Thanks for the replies! It sounds like I need to figure out what I need exactly but this being my first I really don't know?

Can anyone shed some light on Nesika/Phoenix/now Defiance. I have always heard good things about Nesika so I googled it to find they keep changing their name?

They are now by Dakota arms...... I know this because I was having a gun built for me on the Nesika action... Action is built and there but purchase did not happen....

I have a bench gun built on a Nesika J action, and love it. It has the "Borden" bumps (ala Jim Borden design, same as on his actions), which results in a smoother but tight bolt raceway fit. I would feel much happier if it had integral scope dovetails.

I have a friend with a Stiller, and he loves it. Maybe my next action.

Now I'm more confused? According to Defiance they used to be Nesika so is it Dakota or Defiance?

Looking at the 6 options you listed Michael I know I want...

1. Repeater

5. Fluted bolt

6. Interchangeable bolt knob

I don't know enough about...

2. Integral recoil lug

3. Integral 20MOA rail (I do know I want to get the most I can out of my scope mounting but not sure if rail or rings is the way to go???)

4. Thread options???

Sounds like Stiller is hard to beat for the price and turn around time but if you have experience with custom actions I'd like to hear your thoughts on the 6 options Michael listed (why/why not you chose each of them.

I don't mind waiting for the action, I plan on acquiring the parts for the build as I can afford to and then sending them to a gunsmith to put together. I will not be going the switch barrel route and am most likely going with 300wsm in a long action.

Thanks,
Jason

The guy that started Nesika sold it to Dakota or he left and it was sold to Dakota. He then started Phoenix actions which became Defiance.

Now I got it!!! Thankyou! Those Defiance actions are beautiful but scared to go with a company that has a different name every year.

Not a big deal if you dont switch barrels around. I like the idea even with one barrel. Each time you take it apart and clean everything, or get a new barrel, you dont have to worry about getting it lined up with your bedding. The less parts to move or shift the better.

3. Integral 20MOA rail (I do know I want to get the most I can out of my scope mounting but not sure if rail or rings is the way to go???)

An integral rail is just a standard picitany rail that is machined as part of the action. It cannot be removed unless you machine it off. In this case you dont need to worry about thread options since there are none. Again, the less parts to move the better. That said, if it gets screwed up or you need more or less elevation, you cannot change it for a new rail.

4. Thread options???

IMHO, size 8 screws are over-rated unless you are running a super heavy recoiling magnum or 50 cal. Size 6 (which is the standard) is sufficient.

I know Brunos has the Bat actions in stock. I was looking at them and they are REALLY nice. The single shots have a recoil lug under the action and not sandwiched between the front of the action and barrel shoulder. Would make for a nice switch barrel gun. I haven't got to check out other actions, but what I saw with the quality of the Bats at Brunos I would get one of those. He said what ever I wanted was readily available.

Go to dakotarms.com and they have the Nesika name there.. I called and spoke to the guy there and he has a Nesika 338 Lapua made for me that Chris ordered and never paid for...

Another action getting good publicity is Bighorn actions.
I would say any of the ones mentioned in this thread are good. But a guy has to ask himself what he's willing to spend.
And if the extra $400.00 to $500.00 for a Surgeon or Bat is worth paying. I guess if your going to the 1000 yard nationals, a Bat is inline.
But if your hunting or dinging steel, they are all good.
I have 3 Lawton's, Barney era, and love them. But I have a trued Remington that probably outshoots them all.
