Running Yote

I just started hunting these dogs in South Carolina and had a yote run for about 30 yds down a ravine. I am hunting in mountainous territory. I us a 22-250. My loads are a 50 gr nosler b-tip at 3500 fps. it was a verry bad shot in the guts. My Greman Sheppard finished it off for me. Have any of ya'll had one run like this?

heck yes. They are tough as nails. I shot one with my AR a month ago as he was running away. I tracked a decent blood trail till dark:30. Then I and a friend took it up in the am again. About a mile away we lost it. On the way out we saw a yote mousing in a wheat field below us. So we went to the truck an got a rifle. Then set up and dumped him. It turns out it was the samer yote. The night before I had hit him high in a rear leg, and put a hole through an ear as well... Yep you guessed it, it was one of those "spray and pray" deals.

Anyway the last two have been with the .338 and 300 Bergers. Never tracked them far...

These critters are extremely tough. I have made good shots and have had them run 20 or 30 yards. They also camo real well in brush making them hard to see after they fall.

Thanks guys. I thought I had gone nuts. I guess a dead yote is a good yote. The good thing is my dog is 95 lbs and runs like the wind. My 7mm rem mag is goin on the next hunt.

That 250 will get the job done. No need to burn all that powder.

That is true. will a 40 gr v- max do or should I stick with the 50 gr? Max distance is 200 yds.

Either one will do if you hit them more toward the vitals. But if it were me I would either have some 50's or 55's in it. The larger bullest will do a bit better in wind, but yoy probablt wont notice a difference at 200 and less.

I am shooting 50 grain Hornadys in my 250. Shoot the one that you have the most confidence in. I would like shoot heavier bullets than the 50's but my 250 has a 1 in 14 twist and shoots the lighter bullets better.

Very true. I do love my girl. she hunts with me almost always. I will be headed to a range this wk end to see if all is well with my gun and scope. thanks

Congrats on an upstate yote, to you and your girl. My first dog was a Lassie (1950) and the last 4 were "Rin Tin Tin" GSs. Mater of fact the first GS had Rin Tin Tin on his Pedigree print out from AKC. I feel your love for her! Ck your Pvt Messages.

I went to a 6.5 Grendel AR for this reason. I have shot a few coyotes with a 55 Gr. ballistic tip and had them run off a ways. The problem with coyote hunting is that you don't get that good set shot that you are always looking for. Sometimes those yotes seem to have a way of making you have to make an uncomfortable or hard shot. They seem to come into the place that you don't want them too. I shoot a 120 gr ballistic tip out of my Grendel and no matter where I hit them, they do not run far even if it is bad shot placement.

The 55 gr ballistic tip will do great if you hit them right which is what it comes down to. I don't care about pelts so I don't care about all the carnage it makes.

I shot one with my ar 2 Decembers ago that came into about 25 yards. I was hunting heavily wooded area and he came from up wind and caught me way off guard. I leaned around the stump I was siting against and shot it left handed right in the chest. He dumped and got right back up and slowly stumbled off in the snow. It was right at dark and there was 6-12 inches of snow and saw lots of blood so I figured I'd let it bleed out and come back in the morning. I came back and tracked large blood pools for 400-500 yards when they just disappeared when it entered a large field never did find it..... Sorry for my long windedness but yea those buggers are tough.

Might want to try Superformance under a 60. Shoot em fast enough and they'll work out of a 14 twist unless, and I doubt, I got the special rifle.
