Quick one for you guys.

I know you see these questions all the time, but:

Looking to pick up a .308.

Now im torn on SPS Varmit or Weatherby Vanguard HB-ST

These rifles will be used up to 600yds. for deer sized game and paper.

After getting the rifle it will get a new stock, and a Drop Mag system.

I need to keep this rifle under $1000 or less (without glass)

The vanguard is the cheapest way to go considering I can get one for $400. and can get the mag system for $90 includes 10rd mag.

SPS is a bit more and gonna be about $250 for the Drop mag system.

So if you guys have any input to make this easier for me, by all means......

Well I've got a weatherby vanguard in .243 that shoots great, but you'll definately want a better stock. Finding one thats bedded and allows the barrel to free-float should make it that much better. Not positive but the newer models may already be free-floated but mine isn't. Weatherbys are almost always great shooters so that would be the way I would go.

Yeah, I figured A Bell and Carlson varmint/tactical of some kind will fit the bill for the price range im looking at.

Any votes for remington?

The Rem 700 SPS Varmint is one of the best kept secrets out there. Even with the original stock they seem to shoot very well. I also like the longer barrel on the SPSV as it is what I am use to and with the added length it seems to hold better for me but then that is me. I just don't like short barrels. Too bad Wby didn't put a 26" on the MOA as that would of been a good gun also. Just my opinion. All my rifles have at least 26" barrels on them. :)

Yes, barrel length, Not sure what to think there. Where they both have a heavy barrel, I might be looking to cut down on some weight.

My 300wm has a 26", and with a nikon buckmaster (6-18x40) and bipod. It is pretty heafty, shoots like a dream though, no recoil to speak of.

With a .308 im not conscerned about recoil, but want to take advantage of the heavy barrel without a heavy rifle, so maybe shorter is the way to go......Please chime in!!!
